On the new "Beat the Press with Emily Rooney," we dissect Trump's media ban and marvel over The Boston Globe's lesbian-bar story. Plus I've got some choice words for California AG Rob Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom for folding in the Paramount talks. scottvanvoorhis.substack.com/p/beat-the-p...

We've all heard about that NYT poll showing Collins with a 3-point lead. That's an outlier. Nearly every other recent poll shows Jackson with a small lead, and, to this point, none of them fully reflects the impact of the ProPublica exposé.

Further down, there's this gem. (2/2)
Aides initially went to Ms. Peltola’s apartment in Washington to feed Meatball, but the congresswoman later brought the reptile into her office on Capitol Hill. On at least one occasion, the crickets escaped in the office and had to be recaptured, according to two former aides who witnessed it as well as a photo viewed by The Times that showed aides in the office trying to trap the crickets using manila folders and small paper cups.

Maria Bartiromo’s lawyers have been threatening journalists who've said she was fired. Note how carefully the NYT describes her exit. BTW, it's not unusual for settlements to specify there was no firing. I got in trouble myself once for misreporting a "departure." www.nytimes.com/2026/09/05/b...
Ms. Bartiromo still has considerable time left on her contract, according to two people familiar with the matter, meaning that Fox News is still obligated to pay her millions a year despite ending her on-air role. The contract could also keep her from appearing on other networks.

Robo-answer. Sorry, just no.
The online registration form for purchasing Megabucks tickets requires a Social Security number to verify the age and identity of all players. This is essential for the validation process to maintain security and protect player accounts. Additionally, providing the Social Security number streamlines the claiming process if you win a prize in a Second Chance Drawing. Proof of Social Security number is required to properly verify the player's identity and age as part of the account activation and security measures.

This is the conclusion to a Claude summary of a bunch of different popular science articles on alcohol and junk food. It seems pretty reasonable to me. Do you disagree?
Bottom line on the junk-food diet: this is a broad, dose-responsive pattern of harm affecting cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease (obesity, type 2 diabetes), and overall mortality — hitting more systems, with generally larger effect sizes, than what's been shown for one daily drink.

So, which is worse?

A diet built around ultraprocessed food, excess sugar, and additives is the clearer and larger health liability of the two, mainly because it's a whole eating pattern, not a single input — it affects metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, and mortality broadly, with well-replicated dose-response data. One glass of wine a day carries real, non-zero risk (especially for certain cancers) but the absolute risk increase at that specific level is smaller and more narrowly concentrated than what's associated with an ultraprocessed diet.

Neither is "healthy" in the sense of conferring benefit — the "wine is good for your heart" idea has aged poorly — but if you're asking which does more damage, the junk-food-based diet wins that unfortunate contest by a clear margin.

In the AI era, even more than in the search era, there is no substitute for establishing a direct relationship with your audience. www.inma.org/blogs/earl/p...
AI is commoditising content while making verified relationships scarce — and markets eventually reprice what is scarce. The impression, the pageview, and the article are dying as units of value. What replaces them — intent, habit, outcomes, structured trust, brand as the operating system of the enterprise — must be built deliberately, because none of it accrues by accident the way traffic once did.

Ah, Anthropic, the "ethical" AI company. From the Bo Sacks newsletter (no link; not yet posted).
Anthropic did not get hammered because it trained an AI system on copyrighted material. In fact, the judge had already ruled that using copyrighted books for training could qualify as fair use under the circumstances of the case. Anthropic’s real problem was how it got the material. It downloaded millions of pirated books. It copied them. It stored them. It built a system on top of stolen goods.

Claude's getting snarky with me. I asked a question about "the late Senator Lindsey Graham." Here's part of the answer. Well, excuse me!
Graham didn't just recently become "the late senator" in some settled historical sense — he died just two days ago, on July 12, 2026, of a sudden aortic dissection, while actively running for a fifth term. That's very recent news, in case you hadn't caught it.

This is first-order political philosophizing:
"He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within."

A perfect summation of the challenge to journalism in the Age of Trump. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/18/b...
All this presents a profound challenge to journalism. The profession is shaped by an assumption that has been around at least since the Greek tragedians: Revelation is followed by reversal. When Oedipus’ (or Richard Nixon’s) crimes are exposed, he must fall from power. But not so Trump. With a few notable exceptions, he relies on a collective shrug of indifference from those in his support system, and defies exposure. What can journalists do in a world where there is no shame and, apparently, no consequence?
