Tone is where the retakes differ. I compared how each source's energy spreads across frequencies:

The retakes are about 3–5 dB stronger in the 2–5 kHz range. That's the band that makes a voice sound forward and slightly bright, so they sit a little closer and crisper than the original reads. They're also a bit quieter underneath the speech. Low and mid frequencies match closely.

That's most likely to be noticeable where a retake follows an original read directly: 19 → 20 and 36 → 37. If it bothers you there, the fix is a gentle cut of about 3 dB around 3.5 kHz, applied to the retakes only. That's a mild tone adjustment, not the compression or breath gating you rejected earlier.
