The NEET debate has understandably focused on getting young people into work - but there has been much less focus on what happens when they get there. Our new research, out today, finds that first jobs really matter, but that access to the best (with the highest earnings returns) remains unequal -

The type of first job young people get makes a massive difference to outcomes. Brilliant new research from @SMFthinktank.bsky.social supported by @PwC-uk.bsky.social Only 13 % in "accelerator roles" which led to £55k earnings by age 35 - compared to "low-mobility roles" which led to only £28k

Wide regional inequalities in education persist this #GCSEResultsDay. 72% of GCSEs in London were grade 4 (C) or above, compared with 62% in the West Midlands. The gap between the best and worst performing regions has grown slightly from 8.7 percentage points in 2025 to 9.3 in 2026.

The choice between happy pupils and high-achieving pupils is a false one. I’ve written for @schoolsweek.bsky.social on why England doesn’t need to choose between academic ambition and an education system that supports pupil wellbeing. 🧵

Progress on widening access has stalled, with the gap barely smaller than a decade ago. In 2026, university entry rates for young people from the most deprived areas was 22.6%, vs 43.7% from the least deprived.

Closing university access gaps means tackling regional attainment gaps long before students apply. In London, 33% of A Levels were A or above, vs 23% in the North East. 81% were C or above, vs 74% in the East Midlands.

The chances of going to university still depend far too much on where you grew up. Our analysis of UCAS #ResultsDay data shows 43% of 18-year-olds in London have been accepted into university, compared with just 25% in the North East

Reform of the SEND system was a necessity for this government, as cost spiralled at the same time as the system was failing to deliver for many of the children who need it most.
