The location helps in terms of fan large fan base, a team with far less association with racism/intolerance. Hard to get tickets for men’s team. Arsenal were the most sucseful women’s team for a long time.

Neither the UAE and Saudis do not want people coming back in body bags do they so they need others to take the risk.

Rentier economies often struggle here, the army is there to maintain power over commodities and maintain power structures.

I think for all the money in defence - you do need some willing boots on the ground. Not sure Saudi society is set up for that.

Yeah had my house done recently and they don’t seem convinced for older houses. Maybe vested interest. I do think for many there is a better use of smaller subsidies to rescue bills then heat pumps aimed at home owners.

I feel lots of people will start to question whether the cuts that the tories tax savings require will make their overall lives better. Most people are fairly reliant on a functional state even at top 20% of income.

Saudi has tied to make a big investment in its airports and airlines, it doesn’t look great for them if the Houthis can do this at will.

Lots of 2 large 2 lane roads like the A12, A41 are missing. The uk has very strict rules of what counts as a motorway.

danielphilips.bsky.social @danielphilips.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Maybe would be better to separate inter-urban and urban schemes. I’m sure lots of roads schemes do come out well for growth, less well for overall environmental impact.

Seems quite America focussed and nuinced. We have quite a service based economy compared to the USA. Not anti road just think this argument is less clear cut.

Milton Keynes maybe an expeption but is partially because it’s quite small, and now it’s betting bigger it wants to invest in public transport.

Is there much evidence that motorways do that much for growth - I can see some specific area. But induces demand in many areas would fill the roads with low value leisure trips - and aggomeration is high in dense places without lots of car trips - our most car centric places arse not high growth?

The far right in France have made similar arguments on the Frenchness of the football team however. It’s not unique to England.

danielphilips.bsky.social @danielphilips.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Well France makes it virtually illegal to talk about ethnicity. Also I think in France people would be pretty happy to have multiple regional identities and also be French.

It’s just weird to deny that England is a place. If it wasn’t a place then why do we have national sports teams. And it’s way more a place than an ethnicity - JRM point.

No evidence apart form the evidence presented, just like greens oppose the cables to take energy from coast, they oppose new rail that takes cars of the road. Greens want a transition but only at zero impact locally which is a fantasy.

As long as the project is on a roof, with a panel made with no embodied carbon then it’s fine, all other solar bad.

Understanding trade offs is corruption? Are you high? The greens will say they want to decarbonise, yet oppose railways and solar farms. You cannot ever have change without accepting some impacts, that isn’t corruption it’s not being childish.

In the south west overall it does seem to be stormy and where I live in bucks they clean sweep of the town council. Green council often seem to get elected and then people actually see the trade offs and have policies impact them it swings back.
