Today's print column: F1 keeps kicking the can down the road, but racing in Qatar or Abu Dhabi is a risk that the sport simply does not need to take. Yes, millions in revenue will be lost by switching to the Imola backup plan but, if things go wrong in the Middle East, the cost will be far higher.

Pleased to see Lando Norris apologise for what he said. It was the heat of the moment, sure, but regardless it was deeply unfair of him to suggest Franco Colapinto didn't deserve to be in F1. He's now walked that back and said he has spoken with Franco privately to clear up the matter.

A non-F1 piece to bang the drum a bit for Ash Sutton after he confirmed his record-breaking fifth BTCC title this weekend. The fact I couldn’t find his name anywhere despite searching the 2026 BBC SPOTY odds lists of several major betting sites shows just how unfair these popularity contests are.

Disappointed, but not remotely surprised, to see Lando become the latest victim of these idiots. FWIW, I thought Lando's comments about Franco immediately after the race, when he was still seeing red, were harsh. But, in turn, the sadly predictable torrent of abuse directed at Norris is abhorrent.

Using that distance, readings above the hard 60kph limit were produced and so: “The Court is comfortably satisfied that Car 10 [Gasly] breached Article B1.6.3a of the F1 Sporting Regulations twice”. Hence the reinstatement of his two five-second time penalties.
020
Daniel Moxon @danielmoxon.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Alpine’s own reconstruction was described only as a “best estimate” of the distance and so could not be truly considered as evidence. As a result, the panel could only use the distance parameter used in the race to measure Gasly’s times through the pit lane.

Daniel Moxon @danielmoxon.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
From reading through the FIA International Court of Appeal’s 26-page document (not a page-turner) it’s clear the fact neither Alpine nor the FIA/FOM could provide the true measurement of the pit lane has been one of the key deciding factors in this case.

I think it’s less about talent than it is about consistency. We’ve seen in flashes over the years that Lance can get good results – dominant F3 title, podiums in F1 with Williams and Racing Point, some strong results with AM in 2023 – but not nearly often enough!
