The Technological Society
As insightful and wise today as it was when originally published in 1954, Jacques Ellul's The Technological Society has become a classic in its field, laying the groundwork for all other studies of te...

Text Shot: Putting strictly moral questions aside, serious academic research finds that adulterous behavior is an accurate predictor of professional misconduct, duplicitousness, low conscientiousness, and a tendency to betray promises.

I imagine there are a variety of reasons people will listen to a podcast like this, ranging from processing trauma if the listener was close enough to the story all the way to schadenfreude over seeing a controversial Christian leader fall from grace.

The podcast was published between mid-2021 and late-2022. To its credit, and despite being a retrospective on events that had taken place more than five years prior, it does not try to wrap up the story with a tidy moral.

Although the story is ostensibly about Mars Hill Church, much of the focus is given to its pastor, Mark Driscoll and his personality, leadership style and impact on the church and its people.

I mean that we continue to delude ourselves into thinking that artifical enhancements will best our natural selves, only to be (dis)satisfied when that doesn’t pan out. www.danielmoch.com/posts/2026/0...

Something about this feels like an apt synecdoche of our era
The week's greatest (read: saddest) sports story comes from the Enhanced Games, a new Vegas-based competition showcasing athletes openly using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), and vowing to crush records in marquee events like the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter freestyle swim. Interestingly, a competitor who vowed he'd "juice to the gills" performed worse than he did when he couldn't use drugs. Even more embarrassing: The 50-meter backstroke winner was a non-enhanced athlete, thus, writes James Dator for SB Nation, "tearing apart the entire premise for the games." All told, one world record was beaten while three unenhanced athletes won their events. It's a victory for man over pharma.

What I mean is that Teresa’s framing is—for me—clarifying. Now I get to sift through the variety of small anxieties that attend modern life and figure out where I feel unknown. The hope is that acknowledging it will give me a chance to move through the discomfort with some intentionality.

I think this is good. That feeling is a lie when it comes from a machine trained (simplistically) to produce an average response to my conversational input.

This clarifies much of the ick I feel interacting with chatbots. If I am am engaged in some kind of transaction with one, then fair play. But the moment I start to feel known by one, I feel a deep unease and need to take very large step back.

As those closest to me can attest, I do not respond well to being regularly misunderstood. I become bitter, short, passive aggressive. In short, I become smaller than myself.

It’s hard to put words to just how deeply this resonates. I have organized so much of my life around trying to “be useful” or “do something meaningful.” I need to be seen like I need to breathe.

I’ve been reading James K.A. Smith’s "Make Your Home in This Luminous Dark" and was taken aback by this passage commenting on Teresa of Ávila’s "Interior Castle": www.danielmoch.com/posts/2026/0...
One of the threads of Teresa’s Interior Castle that is so prescient and timely is her attunement to the fears and anxieties that lurk within us—anxieties only amped up by late modernity. … What are we afraid of? … At bottom, Teresa suggests, we are afraid of being misunderstood, unseen, unrecognized, bereft of love. We want to be known, recognized, liberated because we are loved as we are.

The reality is that my “habits” recently consist of being distant and grumpy. Sure, I have my own stuff going on, but I have done a poor job insulating my family from it.

A bit over two years after starting to work on it... Go is officially FIPS 140-3 certified 💥 csrc.nist.gov/projects/cry... I am pretty confident Go is now one of the most—if not the most—seamless and complete FIPS 140-3 compliance solutions... with a single env var, out of the box.

Yeah, I’m thinking “local” dev. If you move far enough left folks usually start stripping out mechanisms, and even if that’s unavoidable to some degree I wonder if keeping the policy/mechanism distinction in mind might help drive healthier choices

Dev-Prod Parity has been a thing since 12factors, but I wonder if that can only be accomplished if limited to mechanism. Policies really need to change between dev and prod, no?
