Fewer voices means weaker representation, weaker democracy, weaker communities, and a weaker economy. Read my post about SCOTUS weakening the Voting Rights Act from earlier this week: substack.com/@daniellebre...

My entire feed that’s usually nastiness and nonsense is now filled with pics of communities coming together to participate in No Kings — people engaging in civic life and standing up to a wannabe king, literally what our country was founded on. Almost like that’s the point🤔

I hope the reported 165,000 marchers in NYC today engage in knocking doors for dems challenging in tough districts and civic life in their community. 4*

I marched today because my patriotism, optimism, and love is stronger than my frustration and fear. I realize today was more of a declaration of independence, a performative act (I did get great pictures) and not about holding our president, who thinks any publicity is good publicity, to account. 3

I marched today because I choose to do the work for a more perfect union and to uplift our democracy, standup to hate, dictatorship, authoritarianism, extremism, and fascism. I did not march today to build an ideological movement or for a burn-it-all-down revolution. 2

I marched today because I am a patriot, I love our country, I believe in our country’s constitution and promise despite this president and our imperfect history. 1

The NY State Legislature must go back into session NOW to get this done AND enact legislation to protect are immigrant neighbors. Here’s the bill⏩️ www.nysenate.gov/legislation/...

This was the perfect rally today…short, (not so) sweet, solidarity with Texas dems, and a clear statement that New Yorkers want to fight back and if that means redrawing the maps, we will redraw the maps. The figurative fancy gloves are off and the figurative boxing gloves are on🥊LETS GO!

Yes, I will go to Bay Ridge after work in a storm to stand with constituents of Rep Nicole Malliotakis as they hold her to account to vote no on the budget bill. Just like I will go to Bay Ridge to knock doors for her democratic challenger when the time comes.

And most importantly it is our right to peacefully protest—we should use it or we could lose it. Peaceful (and wet) it was. Now everyone who marched everywhere today needs to come together and do the work to win elections. 🚫👑

I was trepidatious marching today because of safety concerns and I am not sure it’s the most effective tactic. But nonetheless it is a good tactic to counter the birthday/military/silly parade that the narcissistic, unserious, felon, wannabe king threw for himself—very “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.

I support Zellnor Myrie because of his work to expand + protect our democracy AND because of all the other legislations he has sponsored, cosponsored, and helped get passed—the list is long! AND because of the bold policy platform he has put forward as a candidate for NYC Mayor.

Senator Myrie also sponsored and worked tirelessly to get NY State’s John Lewis Voting Rights Act passed.I was privileged to be among the advocates to attend the signing of this bill into law. We couldn’t get this done at the federal level but we got it done in NY State!

This morning, on the first day of early voting, I ranked Zellnor Myrie first for Mayor of NYC. Not lost on me that we can early vote because early voting was one of many voting access bills that Senator Myrie sponsored and got passed in his first month as a NY State Senator.

At a time of disunity, extremism, fascism, and overwelming feelings of powerlessness, being community and doing what we do in community, like marching in Queens Pride feels like a way stand up and fight back — in defiant joy, the theme this year. Happy Pride!

For me it’s about engaging with my neighbors, engaging in community. We don’t have to agree on every thing (that’s actually kind of creepy + cultish) but more often than not we do agree on the big things. We will never know, never gain understanding, never progress if we don’t talk with each other.

I marched with @esindivisible.bsky.social of course but I was with so many of my neighbors from the LIC Coalition and the rest of Queens + Vote Blue NYC 💙💙💙💙 saying hands off! And I have no doubt we will keep saying it. “Who’s street? Our streets! Whose country? Our country!”

Today’s march reinforced my belief that New Yorkers will stand up for each other and our democracy. Stand up to tyrants, dictators, kings, and robber barons. The die-in + resurrection was emotional—beautiful to watch people join in unplanned. A good day for the good fight ahead.

NY #Light4Democracy event was reflective, inspiring, motivating & provided tangible actions to care for our democracy, our neighbors, ourselves. I won’t watch the speech tonight, instead I’ll work on posts for @esindivisible.bsky.social about how people can hold their elected leaders to account. 🕯️

Today at noon I attended a public meeting with over 100 of my neighbors to discuss public land and the LIC rezoning. I believe public land should remain public and be dedicated to community use. 1/

2015 Glamour Women of the Year honored Cecile Richards. She had just been grilled by Republicans in Congress for hours. I felt honored to be in her presence. We had no clue what was to come. May Cecile Richards rest in peace and may we keep fighting, inspired by her strength and power.

Seeing the beautiful production of “Our Town” at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre was a good way to start 2025.

Today I saw “The Substance” — bloody + gory which isn’t my thing, needlessly long, a bit muddled in message, but still profoundly sad. All I can think is that if so many of us hate ourselves so much and don’t strive for true substance in our lives how can we ever understand and love each other.

Push President Biden to publish the ERA now: ⏩Sign the petition, call, text, send a letter to President Biden: bidenpublishtheera.org/about under "TAKE ACTION" ⏩Post using this toolkit: freespeechforpeople.org/wp-content/u... ⏩Call your U.S. Senators + Rep, ask them to pressure President Biden 4/*

⏩We may win in court. ⏩This is the time because after January 20, 2025 days we are going backward. We should be aggressive, stand up for each other, not worry if it doesn’t work…if we don’t fight for it, it definitely won’t work. 3/

The argument for publishing the Equal Rights Amendment ⏩It is harder to take away rights. ⏩If we lose, it will further clarify on the record who the opposition is. ⏩We have nothing to lose and we should not be fearful. ⏩No law or precedent says Biden can’t call for it to be published. 2/

The ERA ensures equal legal rights for all Americans, regardless of sex. The required 38 states ratified in 2020 and it could have been published then but Trump was president. President Biden can call for it to be published now and there is growing pressure for him to so. 1/

Today I saw « Les parapluies de Cherbourg » The day after 9/11 as I stood in line to give blood I talked with a man about « Les parapluies de Cherbourg ». That conversation always stuck with me bc it’s our shared humanity, sharing joy, talking to each other that helps us get through terrible times.

Eight years ago today as part of my family’s Thanksgiving post the 2016 election we wrote these postcards, there were more but I only took this pic. Maybe performative but it was a good action to take just weeks after the election and where we had come together sad + worried. 1/

Today I saw “Africa’s Fashion Diaspora” at the Museum at FIT. While this exhibition makes me sad and angry about our history, it also gives me hope for what can be. Here are four photos, more on FB. I highly recommend going to see this exhibition. Museum is free and exhibition runs through 12/29.

I saw “Conclave” today at the Angelika. Tense, captivating, human, well shot, well acted, surprising, and ultimately hopeful. It was about politics—a process unlike ours, antics all too familiar, and an outcome that I’m not sure would happen in reality. I liked it, definitely worth seeing.

I have always believed & my experience with Vote Blue affirms that conversations with our neighbors, next door who we see everyday, on the buses volunteering & farther away, are the foundation of progress & our democracy. We need more of this beyond the electoral cycle. 🙏🏻💙3*

That commitment, volunteers + those of us doing the organizing showing up every time & leaving it all on the field helped us win NY House races, State races & Prop 1. This is what sustains me through sadness at what we lost & my anger at those who did not do their part. 2/

Yesterday I got a thank you email from Vote Blue for volunteering. The appreciation is mutual. This year I did more than just volunteer to knock doors, I helped organize + promote Vote Blue buses + captain. I experienced firsthand the commitment of Vote Blue & volunteers. 1/
