I get you but I kinda think the context where he said that is important. I read it more as “don’t blame artists for things completely out of their control”

#mwe: As much as I love some woodwindy-synths, too many of the songs feel like intros or interludes or unfinished ideas that are building toward a place they never quite reach. Not sure if we're at hyperpop here or if we've circled back to OG. A lot of good ideas that never quite click for me.
cover art for the album "choke enough" by Oklou. The cover is a photograph featuring Oklou in the foreground on the right side wearing a white tank top and looking up and to the right. In the background we see the interior of what looks like an apartment building with three people. Two of them are sitting on hardwood floor and one of them is sticking their head outside an open window. The two on the floor are also looking toward the window and all three have their backs to the camera.

#mwe: Gorgeous r&b with understated production that lets her vocals take center stage. Don't sleep on the captivating drum patterns throughout. Loved the consistent use of guitar. The lyrics feel sophisticated and deeply personal. Reminds me of a really good glass of wine.
cover art for the album The Breeze Grew A Fire by Mereba. The cover is a photograph featuring Mereba in the foreground wearing a top with sparkly green sequins. Behind her you can see a car in an city environment (it looks like LA to me) headed toward a tunnel. You can see palm trees, traffic lights, and power lines in the distance. It is either dawn or dusk. The name of the album is printed on the top left corner and the name of the artist is printed on the top right corner. A parental advisory sticker is placed on the bottom right corner.

#mwe The best of modern pop-r&b distilled to 22-minutes. Every track is solid but I fear my final brain cell will be occupied by "I've been a nasty girl" on repeat. Dope to see Nosaj Thing on the tracklist. Bonus points because I had no idea she was a Dena girl (even though she went to CV)
cover art for the album "Quantum Baby" by Tinashe. The cover is a photograph of Tinashe laying on the ground with black grease smudged on her body wearing a dress that appears to be made from an old American football jersey. She is lying on sand in front of a car that is covered in sand.

#mwe This is what I want from a big budget rap release. Hire musicians, get an Erykah feature, exhaust those label resources and give us a blockbuster. The concept is well executed and the lyrics are poignant, minus a couple of similes-too-far. Best major label rap release of 2024?
cover art for the album Please Don't Cry by Rapsosdy. The cover features a black-and-white photo of Rapsody's head, slightly tilted and eyes closed, with a fishnet veil over her face with her fingers placed on her cheeks as if she's cupping her face. A splotch of red paint drips down from her eye as if to simulate a tear drop. This is set against a bright yellow background.

#mwe day 7: Stylish production and interesting lyrics that I want to revisit. Wish the hooks grabbed me more. Pop artists should collab like rappers because them and Chappell Roan have all the complementary pieces for a home run.
cover art for the album Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay. The artwork depicts a woman from the collar-bone up looking upward toward a silver hand that is pulling or pushing a cd into her forehead. the background is a blue sky with a few clouds

#mwe day 6: A catchy set that occasionally rises above its cliche arrangements into moments that approach pop mastery. I can’t tell if these lyrics are bad or if I’m old and I fear both may be true. No doubt she can sing tho. Will probably return to this in a late-night swell of drunken shame.
cover art for the album "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" by Chappell Roan. The cover is a photo of the top half of Roan's body, face in full makeup, wearing a bejeweled ballroom dress, a sash with the word "Chappell" written on it, and a tiara. She is also holding a bouquet of flowers. She is facing the camera and behind her is a tri-fold vanity mirror. It looks like she is backstage at a beauty pageant.

#mwe day 5: Ever wonder what it would feel like to explore an alien oasis while a robot massages your brain with cotton candy? That’s what this sounds like. Really like that it feels like a complete experience from start to finish. Makes me think of Scavenger’s Reign and worlds unknown.
covert art for the album “clean dreams” by galen tipton. i don’t know any other way to describe it except as a flat illustration that, i think, seems to be an abstract representation of a platformer video game

#mwe day 4: Reminds me of acoustic Brazilian pop music from the 60s but sung in English. If sampling is your bag there’s some heat in here. Bonus points for avoiding the cardinal sin of being too long. Peak music to dissociate into the apocalypse to.
album cover for Here in the Pitch by Jessica Pratt. The cover depicts a shadowy color photo of Pratt wearing a black blazer against a black background

#mwe day3: If you trim some of the filler and excuse some genuinely terrible lyrics, there’s a really solid 8ish song project in here. James Blake feature worked better than I expected and I really liked the songs with more inventive percussion (tracks 1, 7, 8). Makes me think of sex as r&b should
Cover of the album DOPAMINE by Normani. The cover depicts Normani wearing a black two-piece bikini with metal chainlink accents around the top and bottom pieces while she rides an all black rocket ship, all set against a white background with a parental advisory sticker in the bottom left corner.

#mwe day 2: A bit outside of my usual genres but I really enjoyed this one. Lo-fi bedroom rock that places whispery vocals over crunchy guitars and heavy boom-bap drums, likely courtesy of co-producer Kenny Segal. Reminds me of being young, for some reason, and today I mean that in a good way.
Cover art for the album LOWER by Benjamin Booker. The artwork depicts Booker's face in black and white with a prominent shadow covering most of his face

#mwe day 1: I'm not a huge techno fan so this mostly techno-pop album isn't really for me. "24hr Dog" and "Wanderlust" are standouts, maybe because they feel like the tracks with the most room to breathe. Otherwise I find myself missing the playful pop-r&b of Caprisongs.
artwork for the album EUSEXUA by FKA twigs. the artwork is a desaturated photo of FKA twigs' shaven head with a nose ring and a bunch of really cool ear piercings - one of which looks like a safety pin - staring at the camera with the word "EUSEXUA" written across the top in white text.

screenshot of pitchfork’s review of Kendrick’s GNX with the following text highlighted: “The way-too-neat funky basslines of “squabble up” should be so fat that they rumble like an old muffler, like P-Lo’s Mac Dre homage does on LaRussell’s Majorly Independent. “
