Important proposals for how to fix science funding. Funding needs to map onto how science is actually done: not by demanding this or that result, but by exploring this or that promising direction and seeing what happens.

Autumn is a perfect season for still life. I wonder if the Dutch old masters would respect me for being so efficient by taking photos instead of painting it. After all, what’s “the added value” of doing something for hours and imprecisely if you can do it in seconds ;) #dutchefficiency #autumn

What a fascinating interview with the great @russpoldrack.org. He gives a crash course in fMRI, through his personal history, and discusses some rather interesting metascientific issues about reproducibility, and of course, the future of neuroimaging. This is how interviews should be done.

On the pragmatic proposal an erotetically regimented pragmatics of explanatory relevance preserves Asymmetry, even when Directionality is violated. Hence, it is not clear why Directionality is required for non-causal explanatory relevance relations.

Daniel Kostic @danielkostic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
The ontic proposal takes these explanations to turn on a fine-grained distinction between properties, such that the presence of one property is explanatorily prior to another property. This shows how one could have a kind of non-causal explanation that preserves both Asymmetry and Directionality.

Daniel Kostic @danielkostic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
We argue that there are two viable ways to make sense of this explanation. One approach is broadly ontic, while another is pragmatic.

Daniel Kostic @danielkostic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
After articulating two such restrictions, Asymmetry and Directionality, we consider how they work with respect to an explanation from network theory that applies to both social and brain networks.

Daniel Kostic @danielkostic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
One argument that all explanations are causal explanations is that no extant analysis of non-causal explanations can respect mandatory restrictions on explanation.

In the new paper, Pincock & I show that Kleinberg models preserve directionality & asymmetry in non-causal explanation via explanatory priority of property individuation. Also, an erotetically regimented pragmatics of explanatory relevance preserves asymmetry, even when directionality is violated.
