Thanks to everyone who’s trying out @beavernotes.com and submitting feedback. Beta 3 is coming along a bit slower than I hoped for, especially around Beaver Sync, but I’m still moving forward with new features and fixes.

Turns out one of the reasons @beavernotes.com has always been slow to open is Mermaid.js, which is almost half of the bundle size :/

I’m putting in extra effort to improve performance in @beavernotes.com beta 2 before its release. I’ve been adding features and changes quickly, sometimes sacrificing speed. I don't really like shipping bad software, so I'll make you wait a bit more. Trust me, it'll be worth it. #buildinpublic

I honestly thought of publishing to F-Droid after release, but it could be a great place for the beta too. The thing is, Google still wants the app to be registered with them regardless.

Beta 2 of @beavernotes.com is being pushed to August 10, working on fixing a couple of issues

Daniele Rolli @daniele-rolli.com · 29/07/2026
Yup, it did. It’s a bit messy though. I'm working on fixing that and a couple of other issues I've found in @beavernotes.com 5 beta 1. Though the August 7 release date will hit hard since Ted Lasso comes out on the 4th, and I know I won't be doing anything.

The problem with packaging across every distro is that things fail. Flatpak is not perfect, but I am at least sure it will work now and a year from now on any distribution, which is not currently the case. Version 4.4 has been entirely broken on the latest ubuntu for some time

Sorry to hear that. I’m working on bringing it to the Flathub beta repo. There are some known issues: for now, the app doesn’t start on macOS, it skips onboarding, and it requires a manual reboot to change some settings. I’m working on it

Just got home. First thing I did was to publish beta 1 of @beavernotes.com 5. You can get it at github.com/Beaver-Notes.... Betas are also coming to the Play Store, TestFlight, and Flathub. Stay tuned for more.

Great point. We’re actually using Rust to save things to Sql databases on device. I did consider Automerge, but Yjs is tightly integrated into the editor Beaver uses and compatible with Hocuspocus, which is crucial for the collaboration feature in Beaver Sync.

Yeah, most of the work is done. I’m waiting on the folks at OSSign for the new signing workflow for Windows. After that, we are good to go.

It’s been 3 years since the first commit was made. In this time, Beaver has grown a lot, and we have an exciting road ahead of us. Thanks to all of you for sticking around through the journey 💖; we can’t wait for you to get your hands on the new version of Beaver.

It’s not Markdown, but it’s not proprietary either. Beaver uses Tiptap.dev for the editor, which stores content as structured JSON in a local SQLite database. I believe easy migration is important, so Beaver supports exporting all content as both Markdown and HTML directly from settings.

I'd love for you to try it out! The only thing is that syncing and storage are closely tied together, so it's not possible to separate them. Good news is I'm almost done! Let me know which package format you prefer. Just a heads-up: in stable I plan on keeping only Flatpak and binaries

Daniele Rolli @daniele-rolli.com · 11/07/2026
Yup, totally agree. I was genuinely about to give up and go watch Netflix. The thing is, sync isn’t even technically broken, but it doesn’t update the content until you reload the app and also won’t play well with the future roadmap, so it’s getting rewritten.

Think of Beaver as local-first, like Obsidian, and open source, but built for collaboration like Notion. You own your data, nothing is locked in the cloud. This September, we’re shipping Beaver Sync with real-time collaboration and team features. Plugins with permission enforcement, are also coming.

I know I said @beavernotes.com 5 beta would have landed this week. Unfortunately, I spotted some issues with sync, which is now getting rewritten using Yjs. Tomorrow I’m going to release a blog post with all the work I’ve been doing in the past weeks and also a roadmap update #buildinpublic

That's amazing. I'll be more than happy to get you a copy. Matter of fact, the idea was to get it out this week, but I've been having some issues with sync and storage, so now I’m rewriting that part. I’m going to post more about it here and keep you updated once the app is ready to use.

I’m working on Beaver’s plugins system, but I’m still figuring out the direction I want to take. Some ideas: - Custom editor blocks - Third-party integrations (GitHub, Google Drive, calendars, etc) - Workflow automation and deeper access to your notes I’d love to hear your ideas. #buildinpublic
