I like to think there's a little something for everyone here. There isn't, but I can think what I want.

Someone decided the headless statue was immodestly attired.
A seated statue of a woman. She has her hands in her lap across her skirts, she is topless and headless. However across the grey of the statue's torso someone has spraypainted a strappy top in garish red.

I knew Jonathan Liew on the City verdict wouldn't disappoint.
These are almost philosophical questions, questions of justice and ethics and morality. Do you decide that the strict imperative is to punish or “cancel” the harm done, as Kant or Hegel might have argued? Do you agree with Durkheim that the point of punishment is not exemplary deterrence but the reinforcement of shared moral values, or with Bentham that the infliction of pain for its own sake simply prolongs the original sin, and that the emphasis should always be on averting future evil? And do any of these scenarios end with Victor Lindelöf lifting a Premier League trophy?

I like this anti-doomerism plea from Terence Eden.
Everywhere you look there are signs of progress and hope.

Doomerism, by its nature, is a reactionary concept. It's like those weirdos who reply to every funny story on the web with "didn't happen". An utter unwillingness to acknowledge that - yeah - some stuff happens. The world doesn't change as quickly as you'd like and politicians are never quite as brave in government as they are when campaigning - but stuff gets done!

When the Mayor of London introduced various measures to prevent polluting vehicles from poisoning London, the Doomers said it was pointless. Today we know it led to a substantial reduction in hospital admissions.

You see Doomers bleating about how the Panama Papers exposé led to nothing. That's contrary to all the people prosecuted. Did everyone get the justice they deserve? No. But to reduce it to a nothingburger is the essence of Doomerism. "I don't remember anything important happening, therefore the world is terrible."

Doomerism always feels to me like a psyop designed to keep people dispirited. When everything is reduced to a "yeah, but they won't do anything" then you end up disenfranchising people.

Are there terrible things which need changing? Absolutely!

Are politicians doing everything that you specifically want? Probably not!

Are incremental changes happening if you bother looking for the evidence? Yes.

Why aren't these people looking at what is actually happening, reading about what is being tried, understanding what trade-offs are being considered? Is engaging with reality really that difficult?

I guess a nuanced or positive take doesn't get you as much social media engagement as a childish howl of rage.

Slightly unsure how much was due to the artwork being kept in vaults too close to Tiananmen Square and how much was due to Chinese animators being arrested, killed or otherwise detained.
Directors insisted every one of the millions of bubbles shown in the underwater scenes be hand-drawn, not photocopied. This led Disney to farm out the creation of bubbles to Pacific Rim Productions, based in Beijing. Animators there worked on bubbles while students demonstrated just a few blocks away at Tiananmen Square.

So, why did Britain and America succumb to fascism in the 2020s? Well it seems they fell under the thrall of the charismatic strongman, they were bewitched by these dynamic dictators promising macho dominance, virility and a glorious master race.

Oh to be a terrapin, living in an ancient Roman ruin.
A terrapin in water, crumbling brickwork reflected in that water. An ancient Roman doorway set in pale grey brickwork, the floor flooded and reflecting the stonework above it.
