Forest Floor to Treetops, Cameras Reveal Congo Basin’s Hidden Wildlife
FAU researchers strategically stacked infrared cameras from the forest floor to the canopy in the Congo Basin, revealing unexpected behaviors and wildlife patterns missed by conventional surveys.

New paper out in Ecology where we found an elevational gradient in mammal diversity in the Congo Basin that was only evident when using multi-strata camera monitoring and a multi-scale occupancy model! esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Ground‐to‐canopy monitoring reveals hidden ecological patterns in Congo Basin mammals
Vertical stratification has long been recognized as a key dimension of biodiversity in structurally complex ecosystems, shaping animal movement and community structure. Camera traps provide a powerfu....

“We cannot withdraw from the fact that over 1 million species of plants and animals face extinction.” IPBES remains committed to its mandate to provide the most credible science and evidence about biodiversity to all decision makers and actors. — @davidobura.bsky.social , @ipbes.net Chair
Split-screen image on a deep green background. Left side contains a statement from Dr David Obura, IPBES Chair, regarding the US withdrawal from IPBES and extinction threats to over 1 million species. Right side shows a photograph of a man wearing glasses, dressed in a dark jacket and grey shirt, seated at a conference table with a microphone. The IPBES logo appears at the bottom with the tagline "Science and Policy for People and Nature". The design features white typography on the dark green background, creating a professional contrast. Several small pins or badges are visible on the speaker's jacket.

Landscape-level human disturbance results in loss and contraction of mammalian populations in tropical forests
Tropical forests hold most of Earth’s biodiversity and a higher concentration of threatened mammals than other biomes. This study uses a standardized pan-tropical dataset of 239 mammal species from 37...

My last dissertation chapter is now available open access in Ecology: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... We find that tropical forest mammal occupancy and functional diversity is positively related to fine-scale habitat surface area, as measured using the Microsoft HoloLens.
