The more things change the more they stay the same
Puppy Rex, a black and white border collie wolfhound, curled up fast asleep on the couch against my left hip. My left arm’s lying along his back with my elbow behind his head and my hand on his hips just above his tail.Rex at almost five years old, asleep on the couch with his head resting against my left hip. He now takes up a sizeable portion of the three seater couch with his legs sticking out over the edge.
My left arm’s resting on him again, with my elbow once again behind his head, but my hand only reaches to just past his left shoulder.

Could you perhaps add bands of thick wire with connecting lengths of the same? Basically what it looks like you’ve already done with foam but it may give you a more rigid armature connecting the inner & outer components. Something like this…
The same photo of the headpiece but I’ve crudely circled the interior sections of the headrest in red to illustrate the bands I was suggesting, with red lines nominally indicating where you could span between them with more wire.

I’ve never come across it before I’ll have to check it out. While we’re talking childhood vampire stories, a friend gave this book to my kids, though I don’t think either of them ever read it, but it stirred very dim memories of reading it when I was a kid.
A copy of “The last vampire” a kids book by Willis Hall. The slightly spooky slightlyvhumorous illustrations are by Babette Cole and feature a stereotypical vampire with a flowing cape driving a sleigh pulled by four wolves through the snow with young boy beside him and a bemused looking couple seated behind him.
In the background four villagers are trying to shoo away bats. Two of them are wielding farm implements whilst one is inexplicably swinging a chook.

Name a non lotr character (or two) that could resist the one ring
Vyvyan from “the young ones”. A scruffy punk in a studded denim vest over a Motörhead tshirt, metal stars in his forehead, a septum piercing and bright orange hair.
He’s reclining on his side with his head resting on his hand and a sneer on his face. Zaphod Beeblebrox from the bbc series version of “the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy”. A humanoid character with two heads (both with very eighties mullets), three visible arms and a fairly bedraggled coat. He’s standing in the bar of the restaurant at the end of the universe surrounded by alien drinks and various other space paraphernalia.

The guy on the left is Eddie Williams, two time winner of Australia’s strongest man, the guy on the right is my acrobat turned powerlifter mate Alex who’s the strongest person I personally know (& it’s a crowded field). As Alex said, he looks like a kid out for a walk with his dad.
Two very muscular blokes in a gym with their arms around each other, each is flexing their free arm and smiling at the camera. Eddie, on the left, towers over Alex, who’s by no means a small man.

I may not be straight but if my work needs to be then it absolutely fucking will be
An end-on shot of a bunch of lengths of 50 millimetre square steel tube welded upright down the centre of a long piece of plate steel. They’re so well aligned that if it wasn’t for the fact that the ones at the front are shorter it would look like one single upright. The same piece shot from a different angle so you can see that there’s actually eleven separate uprights in a line.

Proving once again that there’s no such thing as too many clamps
Eleven lengths of fifty millimeter square steel tube welded upright to a long piece of plate steel. There’s another length of square tube running horizontally about three hundred millimetres off the bottom to keep them aligned as I weld them, with an individual clamp for each upright length.

Rex, a large black and white border collie/wolfhound is curled up on a brown leather couch with his head on the matching footstool looking at the camera. Winter, a grey cat is curled up asleep beside him. Winter’s sitting with Soup, a very fluffy tabby, looking out the glass back door at a bird on the back verandah. Their tails are mid swish, almost perfectly mirroring in the way they curl away from each other. Soup lying on a high shelf of a cat tower. Her head’s hanging over one side as she looks at something beneath her while her ridiculously long and fluffy tail hangs over the other.

Unlike me
A photo of me at around age three(?)
I’ve got a wild mop of blonde hair and am dressed in the finest late 70s/early 80s fashion, brown shoes, pants almost the same colour as my hair that are way too long so are rolled up around my ankles. My cardigan’s also too big so the reddish brown and white striped sleeves are also rolled up to a comical degree and on top of that is what appears to be a homemade bib just to round off the ensemble.

Quick and dirty plasma cutting setup is quick and dirty But it works
An odd shaped offcut of plate steel with a ply jig clamped to it is lying on a crude platform of three millimetre angle steel lengths that have been welded together. It’s all supported by two post stands that I’ve placed underneath. The earth for the plasma cutter is clamped to the far endThe same setup without the piece I was cutting. You can see that I’ve constructed it by lying three lengths of angle point up and then welding four lengths of angle on top (also point up) perpendicular to the base three, forming a rectangle which supports the material I’m cutting whilst minimising the amount of material beneath it.

I could cheat & show one of my latest jobs, but this quick & dirty torch holder I threw together from scraps seems more fitting.
The object in question. I welded two pieces of angle together to make a ‘U’ shape and then fashioned a handle out of two semi-circular pieces that I attached to the back. The torch rest is made from another semi-circle welded to the top of a section of key plate, it’s very junkyard chic. The torch holder in use. The ’U’ fits snuggly over the edge of my workbench & the bottom of the welding torch handle rests in the cradle with its tip on the bench

I replied:
That's very funny, although I have to keep reminding myself that when Americans talk about ska they're usually talking about the late 90s/ early O0s revival, not the two tone era. *redacted* is in for Igorrr, shall I grab tix for all of us tonight?

And he replied:
What, you don't put Barenaked Ladies on the same level as The Specials?

Was talking about the utility or otherwise of cheap tools yesterday, this is a perfect example. The bandsaw’s a piece of shit but I needed to find a way to make clean, repeatable acute angle cuts in 60mm pipe & this way I could do it safely & no one would care if it went sideways & damaged the saw

Given my process this is exactly how drilling these holes should have turned out, but there’s always an element of uncertainty with pipe, especially as the holes are offset to accommodate the weld & they were drilled separately so I could use the pedestal drill.
A rectangular piece of plate steel tacked to my workbench with a 150 millimetre long piece of 42 millimetre diameter pipe welded in the centre. There’s a loose piece of 48 millimetre diameter pipe standing on its end next to the fixed piece and both of them have an 11 millimetre hole drilled laterally through the centre. The hole in the larger piece is approximately 5 millimetres lower than in the smaller to allow for the fact that it will sit on the weld when it sleeves over. The same shot, only this time the 48 millimetre pipe is sleeved over the smaller one and you can see that the holes line up bloody close to perfectly so there’s a clear view directly through both pipes.

Ours is the same, we go to a guy who’s only 20 minutes up the road for any steel components but it would certainly simplify things to be able to do it in house. It would have cut manufacturing time for these by around 75% for example
Three spigot brackets in various stages of completion on a ply board. They’re made of three layers of laminated 25 millimetre by 5 millimetre flat steel with a hole drilled in the end and the edges rounded off welded to a capped length of 32 millimetre pipe.

That’s a beauty, mine was all soft tissue damage, even with the partial dislocation of the other shoulder when I hit the ground. Although I hit the door hard enough to bend the hinges which was oddly satisfying to know.
