IIRC, the jury found him guilty of sexual assault and the sitting judge then ruled that he effectively committed rape, so the terminology I've seen used is "adjudicated rapist" (ie. decided by a judge)

I loved this show for 2 reasons - Liu's Watson and her character progression, and its version of Moriarty. Although it was a bit of a bummer that they couldn't do more with Moriarty due to the actor's subsequent commitments (intentional vagueness for spoiler reasons)
