What fine company we keep. www.reuters.com/world/us-liv...
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who championed the push to execute Hasan by firing squad, confirmed plans to livestream the execution in an X post.
Media have sought to televise US executions in the past but have been blocked by the courts.
No other country is known to televise or livestream a legal execution, experts said.
Public executions have become exceedingly rare worldwide. Among countries known to conduct them in recent years are Iran and Taliban-run Afghanistan.

Mathematicians will be as fine as they ever were. They’d be able to apply techniques adjacent to their specialty without a long lead up time to feel things out. The practice of the occupation will change (it also changed with provers), but I think a preoccupation with mathematics will do just fine.

I saw a blog post by someone reading Terence Tao’s posted transcript with ChatGPT. Conclusion: “I could never prompt like Terence Tao” (and Tao very seldom took ChatGPT’s suggestion, he wrote) .

Norway has solution to this actually, stay at home parents can get their share of the public daycare subsidy as cash, that way parents are not pushed one way or the other. the problem of course is virtually no one on the center or right actually gives a shit about parents

Yes, there has been an absolute explosion of 287(g) agreement since Trump took office; more than 1,000 new ones. Multiple GOP-led state legislatures have actually mandated that local police departments signed these agreements, even if they don’t want to.

The rise of 287(g) programs has meant that ICE is increasingly using local police as a very significant force multiplier, with up to 1 in 8 arrests of noncitizens in the interior now being carried out by state and local police. This is going to have profound impacts on community relations.

Gone are the mass raids and militarized metro operations. Gone are the pomp and pageantry. But ICE arrests have hit record levels. ICE operations are no longer concentrated in large American cities. Immigration enforcement officials are also working in suburban and rural areas, all across the US.
A map of the United States that shows immigration arrests per 100,000 people since ICE's new enforcement strategy began under DHS secretary Markwayne Mullin.

How much more fun would it be, and how much more exciting would it feel, to see your legitimate concerns addressed by being able to chant “Let them drown!” into the wet faces of dying migrants as they actually drown in front of you?

Much to think about here from @froomkin.bsky.social. Assuming Democrats are successful in winning House and Senate majorities this November, what do they do with them? The amount of damage Trump and his pet Republicans in Congress have done in the last two years makes this a difficult question. 🧵

The main advantage of abundance, as such, is that it increases utils by having more people on a longer, better ladder that they will promptly pull up behind them.

Taiwan also has very high homeownership rates, but massive home voter brain damage too. They’re riding the massive redistribution of the 1950s, with a paltry redistributive state since. Honestly made me a bit more cool to “abundance” being linked to “affordability.”

As I also found out, it is evidently too stupid to manage their cowork merge with chat without losing all my intermediate container state. Big Mad about that one, I had a repo in one and it lost four days of commits.

You can ask! I test LLMs by asking them to recite a source file from an open source project from memory. You might see an accuracy of 60-80%. Then I ask it to bisect git to find the version it was trained on by highest match. Even for a new model, the source it recites is often about a year old.
