You're right that Bernstein is arguing with a ghost, but unfortunately, that's true on both sides. If you have a context-neutral rule and don't apply it, as schools didn't here, it's a jump to say that you effectively have no rule. Crisis scenario plans only go into effect when the crisis manifests.

I think you're unfairly discounting the argument against the unrealized hypothetical -- critics of the encampments were raising it almost immediately, and schools ignored those arguments despite having plans in place for almost those exact situations. (I have dated first-hand knowledge of this.)

I grew up similarly. The Jewish right's alignment with Trump has been harrowing, but I haven't seen this in many Conservative or Reform shuls. And there are a lot of Zionist, progressive organizations out there (e.g., @thejcpa.bsky.social) hopefully will fill the gap the ADL et all are creating.

Jewish identity goes beyond religion and is more accurate described as a peoplehood. If terrorists attacked Greece, Greeks around the would be be mourning. Japan, Japanese; Ireland, Irish. Jews globally mourn 10/7 for the same reason, not because of our religious beliefs.

It's a hard line to draw, right? Sending aid to Gaza (pre-10/7, in that case) empowered Hamas, and I don't know if that was the intent of the Qataris. Netanyahu's decision to facilitate that aid transfer is also a tough call -- had he declined, he'd be correctly assailed as well.

Of course not, because legacy American Jewish groups have an awful track record when it comes to criticizing the Israeli government. (They, basically, don't). But "alliance with Hamas" is pretty overstated to the point of being misinformation.

Why not just create an IRC-style system where if you lead the post with a hashtag, it automatically goes to anyone who follows that hashtag (provided it's not spam, which you'd have to account for)? E.g. #MLB I can't believe what I just saw! Would go to anyone who follows #MLB
