6. crushes necessarily speak of possibilities not grounded in the real world; they are the stuff of fantasy because you don't know anything about your object (whether person or discipline/medium). this means you will potentially be disappointed, but also that crushes are fundamentally utopian.

1. The term emerges from seven sister schools to describe relationships among women, embedding queer-femininity at the heart of the concept (a fact reinforced by the total absence of—and sometimes prohibitions against—crush discourse in straight culture).

No accident at all that a cowboy sits on the cover of the Strokes' record, paragon of the strong/silent archetype, which is actually a damaged/incapable/dangerous archetype and a representation of how men weaponize silence and emotional incapacity.

Dan DiPiero @dandipiero.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
haha woops maybe I will write about this after all. The two records are like dialectic opposites, each trying to do/say something with rock music but only one successfully. The gender politics of auto-tune are all over the place, especially as it relates to (male) expressions of emotion.

The new Strokes is the first of theirs that I've really disliked. I'm probably not gonna write about it because my reasoning isn't very interesting (auto-tune). Instead I thought I'd share an old essay ostensibly on their last record. I still like this one: lareviewofbooks.org/blog/essays/...

I love this song! But I hear it as super bleak instead of celebratory. To me, rather than capturing the optimism of Obama, it captures the desperation of a generation with nothing to do—suddenly—but drink. I think the video makes it plainer than the song alone.
