This morning, the D&D team and Magic's Studio X informed our leadership of our intent to unionize. We love the games we make and the work we do, and unionizing is how we protect that work. unitedwizardsofthecoast.com/news/dnd-stu...

It concerns me that people are saying they don't have the necessary information to support an already funded center for arts during a meeting *about the arts in our city.* Truly tone deaf and displaying an unnerving interest in the city's future. I hope that, whoever is elected, we do better.

First: that the funding is already there and the Arts and Culture Center is set to open very soon. Second: the numbers are already there in council meeting minutes posted publicly. This budget has come up every time I've been asked about my run - I looked into it after the first time I was asked.

www.standard-freeholder.com/news/cornwal... I was one of the strong "yes" answers here. The argument made by some candidates ("I would need to see the numbers before agreeing" or, worse yet, "I don't think we should be spending more money with taxes too high") ignored some important context.

Cornwall arts centre funding leads to spark at all-candidates' meeting
Biggest difference that emerges from first all-candidates' event of the election is on the arts and culture centre set to open in the coming year.

Of course I value the arts. I exist as the person I am because of them, and I want to see every kid in Cornwall who loves being on stage, or backstage, or in front of an easel, or making silly videos for YouTube, to have the same chances I did. They deserve it.

Being in that role - keys to the school, responsibilities to larger events, authority to sign people out of class - did more to help me grow up than anything else I did in my first two decades, bar none. All because the arts were valued at my school.

I took over stage crew in grade twelve because the former leaders were leaving, and they said I should be the next to take the keys, literal and proverbial. It was my first leadership opportunity outside of D&D (which was my real first, and a whole other story - and, frankly, also theatre).

I joined drama in grade nine because, when presented with music, visual art, or drama, drama meant confronting a severe fear of public speaking. I joined stage crew in grade ten because I loved the idea of the tech behind the scenes. (And because of a girl.)

It was also a place to be whole-heartedly in support of that future - something I care about a lot, as a photographer, a writer, and a former (reformed?) theatre major. I described myself as a "theatre kid" and made it a joke, but it's not really a joke: once a theatre kid, always a theatre kid.

This evening I was lucky enough to attend a discussion on the future of the Arts and Culture in Cornwall at the library, hosted by the Friends of Cline House. What a lovely night to discuss what we all think should (or shouldn't) be done to spread the arts throughout our incredible, growing city.

Wild that I have to say this in 2026, but given that I just heard a city council candidate support the idea: I strongly oppose surveillance like (but not exclusively) Flock cameras being pursued by the city of Cornwall. They have been shown time and again to be tools of abuse, not justice.

Even early, the Akwesasne Pow-Wow is bumpin' this morning. Just saw a great hoop dancing demonstration and what a beautiful day for all of this.

What's better than pizza? Wood-fired pizza served at a beautiful farm just 20 minutes from your house. Complete with free-range (and friendly) turkeys, chickens, and peacock. Today was Fraser Creek Pizza Farm's last day of their 2026 season, which is sad, but I sure loved seeing how busy they were.

Now that it's officially on the city website: I'm excited to run for Cornwall city council this fall. I put together a few thoughts about some early conversations I had last week on my currently-picture-bereft website to get myself started: danbeaudoin.ca/thoughts/202...

Last night I finished the incredible The Everlasting by @alixeharrow.bsky.social and as a lifelong lover of Arthurian legend, I was tickled every time I noticed another little wink to the lore. What a beautiful, heart-wrenching, clever novel.

2005-ish Owen did old English legend dirty with King Arthur, I'm not sure he deserves it.

In high school I had a special dispensation to use a computer for exams due to painful hand cramps when writing with pens. Started using thick fountain pens a couple years back and some combo of thicker barrel and necessary grip/pressure delays the pain long enough to use it for most notes now. ✒️
