Every so often this letter from Alex Ferguson to Eric Cantona goes around. Many years later, Cantona said "Sir Alex Ferguson will be my boss forever."

A nice, annual milestone this week: The point at which the sun starts to rise before 7:30 and sets after 5pm again.

Ran along Irvine beach during the week to have a look at the minke whale that had washed up. Quite a creature and sad to see it in this state. Hoping it died simply of natural causes. #whaleofatime

I usually ask on Twitter, but thought I'd give it a go here instead: Which good books have you read this year? Which would you recommend wholeheartedly (optionally why)? I'll compile the list if there are enough responses. (feel free to repost for a broader spread of recommendations)

reflection is sensible & interesting. go for it! fwiw: In the past I think people often overestimated the power of the campaign itself; now generally underestimate. The Harris campaign seemed extremely poorly run.

It feels ill-considered for her to just make things up about a life and death bill. Do you think she just panicked?

Is the Gladiator 2 team faking Google Reviews? These don't really ring true as casual, amateur reviews.
Gladiator 2 triumphantly returns to the brutal world of ancient Rome, echoing the spirit of the original while introducing fresh elements that make it stand out as a worthy sequel. The film seamlessly captures the raw intensity and grandeur that fans loved in the first movie, with a compelling storyline that brings new characters to the forefront while still honoring the legacy of Maximus. The visual spectacle is breathtaking; the colossal sets, detailed costumes, and dynamic combat sequences transport viewers straight to the heart of the Roman Empire. The gladiatorial battles are intense, beautifully choreographed, and more visceral than ever, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The director makes excellent use of modern technology to enhance the immersive experience, without sacrificing the gritty, realistic feel of the combat scenes that made the first movie a classic. The narrative is well-crafted, balancing political intrigue with the personal struggles of its central characters. It delves deep into the complexities of loyalty, power, and the thirst for revenge, raising the stakes higher than ever. The performances are a highlight, with a cast that brings depth and emotion to their roles, ensuring that the characters are more than just warriors—they're fully realized people with motivations and flaws.

Indeed, as said, I've read the bill, and I've watched the marketing campaign roll out to this stage, including appointing a friend of Keir Starmer as chair of the organisation pushing for it. Interested to see what happens this week, and following that. Thanks for the chat! Night to you too.

I am thinking of it logically, rather than emotionally, having looked at how it has rolled out elsewhere. Oddly my thoughts on it changed around 10 years ago, sitting on the Eurostar next to a professor who specialised in it.

I believe it is useful to know the facts on a literal life or death topic if I am going to encourage others to form an opinion on it.

The option is there today, but there is not a legal/societal prompt to specifically examine whether you want the state to show you to the door.

I also recognise it has come about essentially through a marketing campaign, and that campaign will continue after it becomes law. Worth reading the bill, and the evolution of MAiD, if you have not, and if interested in it beyond the principle.

I see it as flipping to a system where, if someone is told 'you have 6 months to live' (which is of course ambiguous, meaning potentially pressure to push for prognosis), there is a new prompt, in law, to choose whether to die early. For some = no issue, for some = inherent pressure.
