I tried to become an editorial cartoonist nearly as hard as I tried to become a strip cartoonist (and at one point, years before I got a syndicated strip, I had United Media nibbling at those efforts; they then ghosted me). I’m glad that didn’t work out. I’m glad it’s not my job to be mad.

He didn’t found a women’s shelter that only accepts white people. He didn’t found the Scott Adams Foundation For Taking Away Civil Rights. He didn’t bankroll legal efforts to strip rights from nonwhite people. He was an awful person. JK Rowling is, in terms of impact, much worse.

His career just went up in smoke. He died a comics world pariah. And it’s good that open racism was a hard line for us. I think it ought to be. I wish transphobia was that kind of hard line for people. Scott Adams just WAS a racist. He didn’t spearhead an active anti-civil-rights movement.

I think we all understood why he was there, but also, when he went on his career-ending racist tirade, AMU (his publisher and mine) dropped him, and pretty much the whole NCS went “can we kick him out?” People were kind of disappointed that we couldn’t (he wasn’t a member).

I did not win the Cartoonist of the Year Reuben. But as I keep explaining to people, I was actually rooting hard for Mark Tatulli, who did win! Mark is a lovely person who’s been very good to me, and he’d been nominated 14 times to my 3. It was his turn! I couldn’t be happier for him.
