We keep treating AI like it has a brain like it thinks, feels, means things. And then we turn around and treat human brains like they're just systems to debug: fix your focus, optimize your productivity, patch your "inefficiencies." 😒

Optimising the regularisation parameter in Whittaker smoothing • NIRPY Research
Whittaker smoothing (aka Tikhonov regularisation) requires the estimation the regularisation parameter. In this tutorial we discuss and compare two approaches.

A few pages for all the vacuum tube enthusiasts out there, courtesy of The Secret Life of Circuits.
The Secret Life of Circuits by Michał Zalewski, with a pop-art cover showing a woman holding a soldering iron, beside a photograph of three vacuum tubes. Text reads “Tube computers used as much electricity as a small town.” Additional text says “Now shipping from nostarch.com” and “Swipe for a look inside.”Page 163 of The Secret Life of Circuits. A graph shows collector current in a PN2222 transistor rising sharply to approximately 70 milliamps near 1 volt, then increasing gradually as collector-emitter voltage rises. In fact, modern PCXI methods enable true multi-modal imaging, whereby attenuation, phase-contrast and small-angle scattering maps from samples can be reconstructed from the same set of images. 7/N

This is the beautiful result of this paper. You develop a PCXI technique to image two samples simultaneously, where each sample will act as a modulator for the other, but a clear image of each sample individually can be reconstructed computationally. 6/N

Daniel Pelliccia @dan-pelliccia.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Generally, the field modulation is generated by means of a periodic or random modulators. In this paper, Zdora et al realized that the role of sample and modulator are really interchangeable. You can think of the modulator as another sample! Or you can use a second sample as a modulator! 5/N

PCXI can be realized in many ways, most of which require a modulation of the x-ray field before or after the sample. By tracking the minute changes to the modulation field caused by the sample, phase-contrast images can be obtained computationally. 4/N

For instance, x-rays used in radiology are good for imaging of bones, but not for soft tissue or cartilages. For that, one needs a CT scan, which is great but imparts a much higher radiation dose. PCXI has the promise to solve the issue and reduce radiation dose. 3/N

One of the most significant development in x-ray imaging in the last 30ish years are techniques to produce phase-contrast x-ray imaging (PCXI). Just like its optical counterpart, PCXI enables imaging low-absorbing samples, for which conventional, attenuation-based imaging is not suitable. 2/N

Known as Beta Pictoris d, it is the faintest exoplanet ever directly imaged from Earth. This is a major feat, as direct imaging only works for #exoplanets bright enough to show up next to their much brighter host stars. How does the newcomer compare to its siblings? 🔭 🧪 2/3
Six-panel montage of observations of the same star system taken between 2014 and 2025 with ESO’s VLT (SPHERE and ERIS instruments) and the James Webb Space Telescope (NIRCam). In each panel, the central star is hidden behind a coronagraph and marked with a white star symbol. A faint companion, highlighted by a white arrow, is visible at different positions over time.

2. If you've ever trained a machine learning model from physical data, you know that acquiring calibration samples may be costly and laborious. But if you have a cheaper proxy, for instance optical or near-infrared #spectroscopy, you can use that proxy to pre-select the samples for calibration.

I struggled with verb tenses when editing this article. We're seeing this galaxy as it was 12.7 billion years ago. Based on how it behaved then (which we're only seeing now), astronomers think it'll stop forming new stars in 50 million years, i.e. 12.65 billion years ago. My head hurts.🧪⚛️🔭
