The Blackout That Could Devastate America (Gift Article)
The power grid relies on thousands of aging, hand-built transformers. If enough fail, the blackout could last years.

This is a really...thing-focused perspective. I wrote about exactly this in my book HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS -- the quotidian luxury of our homes compared to the past -- and I still think the real change is our *collective* infrastructural systems for electricity, water, communications, and more.

Deep dive into this bizarre controversy. I appreciate the close attention involved in this piece and it's more general conclusion: "But who even cares about facts or evidence when you’ve got a good grievance fantasy to ride? Just join the pile-on. It’s a lot easier than reading books."

There's a couple things I want y'all to do when you see allegations on the internet provided from one perspective: 1) Were good faith opportunities taken advantage of before going public? 2) What is there to gain from going public?

I agree! There's interesting questions here. A lot of nonfiction comics are works of synthesis that can reach a popular audience. How do we best center original research and the people who do it? And where in a comic does that attribution belong?

can confirm Tillie talked about the importance of Cleves' amazing original research multiple times during our public conversation. In the first paragraph of Tillie's process page on her site, she says it would be impossible to overstate the importance of her work & untangles what was used where.

This was, ultimately, the point of substack: throw money at reactionary bloggers, claim that this is a new media and not just fissioning off the clicky bits from legacy publications, then let the price of media giants drop enough for all the worst people to buy them up and install their media pets.

And the reason why I keep banging on about it is because the politics we get if more of us understand this technological shift and its implications is a hell of a lot better than what we get if we think that we have to protect ourselves from privation and suffering, even if it means dooming others.

My level of optimism or pessimism about whether any particular group of humans will get their act together and actually do it varies by the day. But that it’s now physically and technologically possible to transition to renewables and to use that energy to close materials loops isn’t in doubt.

How do you illustrate the importance and possibility of back-channel diplomacy beneath superpower tensions? @dan-nott.bsky.social knows! and nailed it for this story in the International Policy Journal launch internationalpolicy.org/publications...
on top of a table, a half-globe shows China and the US facing off with missiles and ships and jets (yes those are F-35Cs).

Beneath the table at desks and white boards and conference tables, researchers of all stripes and nationalities collaborate and talk green energy in a collaborative fashion. It rules.
