This is what happens when you let a war profiteering finance tech bro run your space agency, instead of someone who, like, knows how cooling in a vacuum works. But sure, let's just double the energy cost of compute by literally adding rocket fuel.

It's not a Horseshoe, it's a Hill
Imagine a hill. You have the option to go up the hill where things are better for almost everyone, or you can go down the hill where things are worse for almost everyone. We all have to go up or down together. Going up the hill takes effort, it's painful, it's difficult. Going down the hill takes a different kind of effort, and will result in a lot more pain, but that pain is for when you get there, not while you're going there. For generations, people have been slowly but surely walking up that hill. Sometimes they stumble, sometimes they fall or slide.

And sometimes, people decide it's not worth the effort to keep climbing. They don't necessarily want to go down the hill, but they figure the easiest thing to do is to just stay put.

Centrism (or Liberalism) is the politics of comfort. When a centrist or moderate says they are equally appalled by "both extremes," what they mean is that changing anything will negatively impact their comfort. Moreover, they are more amenable to being dragged down the hill than up it, because the immediate discomfort of going downhill is less than going up, even though the consequences are far worse.

Further, the suggestion that things could be better creat a moral discomfort for th centrist, so the centrist adopts "horseshoe theory," which basically asserts that wherever we are right now happens to be the top of the hill, and that changes in any direction is actually just going downhill by different routes. This is not evidenced by anything, because horseshoe theory is a thought-terminating cliché. It exists to prevent someone from considering any action.

The truth is that there is no top of the hill. There is always a better state, we just have to work to get there. Capitalism, grudgingly, has allowed the minimum level of comfort necessary to get people to sit down and make themselves an anchor for everyone trying to pull us forward. It's true, they are an anchor for the smaller number of lunatics and fiends who want to drag us a…
