Since Ruby Bridges was escorted to school in 1960. 1980 is when Jerry Falwell made pro-life a thing because people lost the heart to fight desegregation like he wanted.

JD Vance makes excuses for white nationalists: "When you demonize a guy because he's white, it's just as evil as when you demonize a guy because he's Black. When you demonize a guy because he's white ... some people will get radicalized into some very dangerous ideas."

Isn't it odd that they'll immediately ask this question to a left wing/Dem candidate w/middle eastern family origins, yet never ask white GOP candidates if they will disavow the far-right, White Supremacist orgs that so many of them fraternize, take donations from and associate with? Crickets . . .

Unacceptable. Meta took down the No Kings Instagram today and kept it offline for well over an hour. Censoring free speech to appease Donald Trump? We the people deserve answers, but regardless, we will not be silenced.

I’m glad more people are pointing this out. I talked about it it a few weeks ago w/ @janus.bsky.social Companies are attempting a sleight of hand where they capture data but argue because of how it’s processed it’s not “recording” and is thus private. They are still surveillance devices!

We can’t just change the definition of ‘recording’
Soon, asking “Does this device have a camera?” won’t be good enough.

for as long as i've been alive, republicans have ran the same playbook: a few weeks before voting begins, they roll out completely fabricated smear campaigns. these things are always coordinated, so the talking points take over the news. the party is never electorally punished for their dishonesty.

Of course I don’t want anyone’s compensation limited, but the young man’s poor play and if he does again what happened tonight; he’s going to limit his own compensation. Hopefully, he learns from it and balls out the rest of the season

Rightfully Bama isn’t going to really take a hit in the rankings. They took the best team in the country to the brink and honestly the picked up flag cost them the game. I don’t see the committee holding that against Bama. If they win out they’re good

No, he pushed the limits. He got his “hit back” once already. The second was extra and that’s what drew the penalty. To do that in such a situation clearly isn’t considerate of his team nor the situation.

Of course but even when playing poorly if there’s a chance to come back and win/tie for OT and someone makes poor plays and decisions that becomes a more direct impact

The refs blew it. That was clearly pass interference, they even threw the flag. Then on the sack there was a facemask. Refs clearly wanted Georgia to win. There’s no way you do that in back to back plays #CFB

And you know, there is something obscene about using the exploitation and murder of poor Black men, women, and children as a metaphor for a largely white electorate supporting a conman. The comparison borrows the horror of their deaths while discarding the conditions of their lives.

If Jonestown is going to teach us anything, let it be how human needs can be weaponized, and how power destroys the possibility of refusal. Remember the victims as people instead of cheap synonyms for being an idiot.

That’s what disgusts me almost beyond reason — the casual assurance that these people died because they were foolish, and that our cleverness would have saved us. Like murdered families are a compliment we pay ourselves for being so smart.

There are serious things to say about authoritarianism, manipulation, and cults of personality, but “lol, drink the Kool-Aid” does none of that work. It makes the victims’ supposed gullibility the memorable part and lets the machinery of their captivity and agonizing death disappear.

At the end, children were poisoned and armed guards surrounded the pavilion. People objected because they wanted to live. They were shot for it. Whatever individual adults believed or chose, calling the whole thing blind devotion erases coercion, and children cannot consent to their own murder.

People were isolated in a remote settlement in Guyana, subjected to surveillance, threats, and intense punishment. Leaving was dangerous. Some escaped, and others desperately sought help getting out. “Why didn’t they just leave?” is remarkably easy to ask from somewhere you’re free to leave.

Peoples Temple drew members through promises of racial equality, material support, and community. Most were poor, many were elderly. 70% of its members (and victims) were Black. Wanting somewhere to live with dignity and joy was the vulnerability Jones exploited.

I am so tired of Jonestown being a stock reference for “haha, you’re in a cult.” 918 people died, most against their will, and still it has become shorthand for how stupid you think someone is. It's the McDonald's hot coffee incident of mass death — universally referenced, entirely misremembered.

each community gets a handle that doubles as a URL, like community-name.bsky.social or community-name.bsky.space. go to that URL and you land on a custom homepage for the community. builders can also host a completely custom experience there instead.
