Apropos of the film I just saw, I wonder if my grandfather or his father decided to change how to pronounce our last name because of Abbott and Costello. Houx should be pronounced “Who” but we say “How-ks” “How-ks on first” doesn’t work.

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING: That’s a helluva thing. The meta aspects raise interesting questions, but do so in keeping with the film’s themes. The meanest thing I could say in an age of content and in the context of Nathan Fielder, it does feel a little like six episodes. But, great.

One of the things that makes fighting films kinda sucky - like most of the MORTAL KOMBAT and STREET FIGHTER films is - much like its grandparent ENTER THE DRAGON, it casts some actors who are aren’t great fighters. BLOODSPORT is still one of the best tournament films because they’re mostly fighters.

Another facet of where the industry is at is it’s hard for creatives to believably sell their remakes/reboots/IP stuff to the press when the industry says it’s gonna make more TRANSFORMERS movies regardless and doesn’t hype original content. “Oh you WANTED to make this? I don’t believe you.”

Legacy stuff now is more about tone than plot, partly because the people making and watching it don’t want radical change. Unfortunately it tends to make it easy to watch but pointless, but in an era of too much entertainment, name brands will dominate the market because people know CRYSTAL LAKE.

One aspect of modern society is that people on the left/liberals/whatever have an aversion to being in charge to their detriment. We’re starting to see more evidence of people waking up to that in politics (basically any young Dem), less so in arts/journalism/etc. We need liberal publishers, etc.

One of the things that Nolan got from Kubrick is cadence. People treat both reverently because of the hurdle of iambic pentameter. It’s a way to get normies to take things seriously they wouldn’t any other way. But the text is “stupid guy does stupid thing, often ends up okay.”

As I get older, the things that ages and limits most people is being incurious. I think a lot of people think they learned everything in school/by a certain age. Everything good and interesting is learning. Not wanting to be challenged or evolve is death, physically, spiritually, intellectually.

Mike Flanagan’s JAWS comments highlight a problem with a lot of modern creatives: too much fealty. I want directors who think they’re better than Spielberg/Hitchcock/etc. I wish when people used the Woody Allen or John Carpenter fonts it wasn’t in homage but saying “bitch I do this better than you.”
