Cal had a surprise trip to the vet today for some bladder inflammation and as a result, has had his first pill. He was NOT impressed by the experience, but now he is stoned, so there's that. Also I think this was his first trip in the carrier with the viewing bubble. 👀

My eight-hundred-year-old 5lb tiny blind deaf declawed (by previous owner) arthritic cat Harold can find these in the middle of the night, ascend into the bed, silently align all four tiny paws on my neck, then scream into my face like he's opening up the pit at a hardcore show. It makes him happy and might be the reason he continues to live despite being older than the crypt keeper and having no functioning organs. Really I got these so my small dog (who can't go more than 3 seconds without physical contact but hates being picked up) could get into bed.

In the formation or modification of principles, and the practice of conduct, much help can be derived from printed books (issued at sixpence each and upwards). I mentioned in my last chapter Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. Certain even more widely known works will occur at once to the memory. I may also mention Pascal, La Bruyere, and Emerson. For myself, you do not catch me travelling without my Marcus Aurelius. Yes, books are valuable. But not reading of books will take the place of a daily, candid, honest examination of what one has recently done, and what one is about to do—of a steady looking at one's self in the face (disconcerting though the sight may be).

Dragon who arrives from the sea, your breath melts skyscrapers and your tiny hands wave piteously. In the city they chant your name, a mantra, a prayer, hoping the sea might bring more than destruction. You lift yourself from the water, feet planted square on bus tracks and shopping malls. O lizard of psychic remembrance, O dragon, dinosaur, our angered water spirit, you may also become a protector. You bat pterodactyls away from the city with one hand, stop the flames of a turtle with another. Your hands like decaying sea-flowers. You roar as if hurt, your mouth horrible, your atomic breath a curse you cannot end.
