It may seem like you're missing out on everything in the world because you have taken five years to get new skills and new knowledge. But when you have it and you're set for the world, it would be like you never left. The best things are not in the past. They are in front of you.

2026 is here and I say congratulations to you for making it into the new year. Forget all the resolutions flying about. It's a new year but same you. Make conscious efforts to do what needs to be done!

"Whether at a conference, in a classroom, or over a pint at a pub, we have a responsibility to make science accessible, engaging, and meaningful". Read our latest blog from @drmikeshaw.bsky.social about presenting their research on phage biology at a Pint of Science event in May. microb.io/3G2KkKu

When lockdown hit in 2020, Nigerian student Akpan Friday asked for help online to keep learning. Dr Beth Mills from Edinburgh answered—with free microbiology lectures. They’ve never met, but their mentor–mentee bond is thriving. Click the link in our bio to listen 🎧

I wrote *another* article, yay! This time it's about parallels between genetic screens in model organisms and the mechanisms of inherited risk for complex diseases in humans, and how #AI may be leveraged to untangle these mysteries. #GWAS #Genomics #Drosophila #Cancer #Alzheimers 🧵 1/n

This week the team are at #EdSciFest @ntlmuseumsscot.bsky.social. Come and say hi, guess how many eye balls are in our jar, and diagnose a 👁️cornea infection (microbial keratitis)... is it bacterial or is it fungal 🧫🔬? We're here Mon-Thurs @edinuni-irr.bsky.social @uoe-eid.bsky.social #microsky
Photograph shows our display at the Edinburgh Science Festival, where we are educating on what microbial keratitis is (an infection of the cornea and leading cause of blindness). The tables show info-graphics, eyes in a jar, contact lenses, microbe culture plates, microscopes, and members of the research team. We are representing the University of Edinburgh. Photograph shows members of the public interacting with our display. This includes watching a video and guessing how many eyes are in the jar

Ok, I'm glad you brought this up. Hear me out. Natives and Non-natives have the same problem, essentially. Most of us can't write a coherent scientific narrative. It may be more obvious when reading someone who has poor syntax that we don't understand what they're saying, and we may be tempted to 1/

@damiakpan.bsky.social a brilliant advocate for the profession, and brings so much energy as a MicroSoc Champion. Of course, I’m thinking of all the things I wish I’d articulated better, but Akpan is completely engaging and will make it well worth a listen when it airs. #MicroSky #UKRIFLF
