More common English translation IMO is “it ain’t over till it’s over” and that is even funnier to me

Reference for trees is something universally human. It’s difficult to explain, but we all know it at some level. And we all know this is wrong.

What, do we want to live in an echo chamber?? Of course, my personal interest in rehabilitating a radioactive waste dump of a platform has nothing to do with my financial interest! I just love Free Speech :^)

We thought the “looks close enough” ethos of historical TV and film was egregious enough a few decades ago. Little did we know how far we were from this echelon of misinformed, lazy, money grubbing.

That’s part of the schtick though. Even the OG Nazis did it. They are owning it in a way that dismisses all disagreement as overreaction. “I’m not being political bro u mad bro it’s just rampant Nazism and AI CSAM bro it’s not a big deal I’m Just Asking Questions and Noticing Things bro”

The “u mad bro?” ethos of 4chan has no place among serious adults. And given the topic, it’s not a far jump.

My immediate thought. If true, that is just a little more than his weight. Which is pretty good for an average guy who’s almost 50, and absolutely pathetic for a combat vet and leader of the US armed forces who incessantly gripes about wimpy men.

His posture is weird (nothing like most military, surprise). He works the stage like a high school principal nobody respects. And, ironically, the slightly small/outdated fit of his suit kind of makes him look like he’s wearing a woman’s suit.

Can a calculator have a sense of humor? It can at least act like does. The research is dividing 12 year olds.

I’m thinking it does here specifically, re: the animosity Musk, Altman, and Amodei have toward each other and their desperation for state influence. Not to mention how this kind of bluff might play re: China, Russia, et al
000
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
As a bluff. If they can keep their competition tied up in the red tape it takes to meet the slowdown/safety regulations, whoever has the right connections and capital can train alternative models in secret. That would not be an unprecedented move.

Personally, I think it’s a rather transparent attempt at slowing down “official” development so their actual attempts at winning the arms race can truly go underground.

Sorry to hear that. I know quite a few MAGA farmers. I also know some socialist and liberal farmers (and this is in the rural South). What do I win?

Farming is a loss generating business largely because of a system they have very little say in. The average Trump voter is statistically far more likely to be a middle class suburbanite. Farmers have been leaving the GOP in droves for the last 10 years.

All it takes is a state actor evil/stupid enough to employ AI (overhyped or not) in an actual arms race. And just because they’re grifting on doom scenarios doesn’t make them implausible. Let’s be honest: if these techbros were around in 1942, they’d have bought stock in German rail and Bayer.

John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
No, I’m afraid it’s got nothing to do with Israel or even Jews specifically (though your own meme brought that up first). I think the question might be (if it makes you feel better): Why call out the US for denying safe haven to Holocaust refugees and not the UK for doing the exact same?
000
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
But, the silver lining is that we see your true colors now. This was never about the lives saved. Rather predictably, it was about idealizing the man/nation to whom you’re sympathetic. The Internet is forever.

John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Of course! You’ll be glad to know that pretty much all of them were also denied asylum in the UK after September 1939. There are photographs of them being deported, actually. Does that make you feel better?
100
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I’m not sure 500,000 to 1,000,000 lives is a “nothingburger.” At least, not any more than the 500,000 to 1,000,000 who were also denied safe haven in the US. Again, this isn’t a “well actually.” It’s alright to be wrong. I think fixing the error would help your point far more than ignoring it.
100
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
“…was the first to fight the Nazis effectively, while also denying asylum to at least a half-million Jews” would be equally accurate. And yet it’s omitted. Yet the US is (rightly) called out for its own hypocrisy. Do you not see an issue? The Jews whose families were denied entry probably would.
200
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The US accepted somewhere around 150,000 while Britain accepted somewhere around 75,000. These are well established numbers. Again, please do not take this criticism personally or as an attack on Churchill’s character. It just simply harms the point the meme is trying to make.
200
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Yes, Britain let *some* Jewish refugees in. The US also let *some* Jewish refugees in. This doesn’t change that Britain had a blanket policy after September 1939 of denying immigration from any Nazi-occupied area. Historians estimate 500,000 - 1 million Jews were denied asylum in Britain.
100
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Sorry, no. I think just the opposite? This isn’t an obscure quibble, it’s a pretty widely known fact (though perhaps not to the general public in the UK?). The meme itself otherwise makes a quite powerful and salient point for this time but is unfortunately undermined by the last bit.
000
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Of course! But you see no issue with criticizing the US for turning away Jewish refugees while, as you now know, the UK was doing exactly the same?
200
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Yes
100
John @damhdubh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
That’s definitely a common and balanced take. There is also the persistent take that this criticism should apply to the US and the UK. I don’t know how to judge it morally, as I wasn’t there making those choices. But the image is desperately factually lacking.

Not to demonize the man, but Churchill did in fact refuse Jewish refugees to Britain. There’s been quite a lot written on it.
