Doesn't always mean something bad's afoot, maybe the devs screwed up and broke the sign-in page or smth, but it should be a red flag if passkeys don't work all of a sudden without any clear cause.

On that note tho, usually that should only be the case if you lost your passkeys. If the website won't accept your passkeys that you do have, and you know you're using a browser that supports using passkeys, you should start checking for any signs of it being a fake sign-in phishing page or smth.

You're right that passkeys are more secure, but you should have multiple ways to sign-in. If you have TOTP set up and backed up securely but only use it on the occasion that you can't use passkeys for some reason, that's better than only having passkeys/MS Auth and maybe getting locked out one day.

And the number-matching can be shown in two different forms too. One of them makes you manually enter the number, the other one makes you choose the correct one out of three numbers.

There's also two different versions of the Microsoft Authenticator prompts you can be presented. One version is shown usually during passwordless login, and it makes you pick the correct number shown on the sign-in screen. The other one, shown during 2FA, doesn't have the number matching thing.

On the old version of the sign-in page, you could sign in with a passkey without entering a username by clicking "More Options", but on the new version, you have to enter an email address, unless you're on iOS in which case you can force the passkey by autofilling it in the username box.

And then there's an "I have a code" menu, which will accept ANY code from ANY registered method — MS Auth code, TOTP code, and if you somehow managed to already get one but haven't used it and it's still valid, an email or SMS code too.

There are two menus where you can enter authenticator codes. One of them only accepts the 8-digit codes generated by the MS Auth app, but the other one can accept either the 8-digit codes or the generic TOTP 6-digit codes.

There's actually a bunch of ways to sign into Microsoft. There's the normal MS Auth prompts, there's fallback 8-digit codes it makes, you can register a generic TOTP app but this one is a bit hidden, you can register passkeys, security keys, email, SMS (being deprecated), and legacy Windows Hello.
