I (25F) inadvertently went along with a coworker’s assumption that I’m dating my grumpy weirdo colleague (35M). Word of that spread to others, and it somehow escalated to a point where I publicly asked him out for lunch in front of staff, and to make matters worse he seemed really, really happy about it.

So yes, he saw her for the first time through that haze of smoke, perched on a concrete half-wall while staring up at the lights and open sky, unlit cigarette clamped between two fingers—but Ben knew that she spent most nights sleeping on his friend’s couch; that she tagged along on theme park dates as a single rider; that she was co-dependent on one-half of the engaged couple inside; and that—an assumption on his part—she was miserable about it.

The engagement.

And so he’d approached, committing her pale-yellow shift dress to memory while closing that distance. Even now, he remembers the way it floated off her as if a size too big; how it complimented her hair (a dark shade of brown he wanted to know in the sun; half-up-half-down, baby wisps flicking up at her hairline with a will of their own); how her hand bunched into the fabric at her knees when he asked if she needed a light.

Her head had shifted his way, and from the look in her eye, she’d heard about him too: Poe’s shitty friend, who didn’t text back, and ignored most calls, and who was so often a no-show to these types of things.

God, Ben remembers it all.

a sad #reylofic with a sprinkle of hope

She thinks about him sometimes. All the time. Him, and everyone else: Han, and Leia, and even Luke.

Skywalker, Rey calls herself now. The last Jedi. Maybe it’s for a sense of purpose, or belonging, or both. Maybe it’s to carry on a legacy she prefers over her own. Palpatine. That she dislikes, though Skywalker doesn’t seem to suit either.

Solo.

Yes, Solo makes the most sense. She’s alone now. Finn, Poe, and Rose – they’re off doing their own thing; their own part in reforming the Galaxy.

Rey isn’t much involved in that. Rey isn’t much involved in anything. She often spends her days hurdling through time and space, seeking something out.

A reason. A hope. A flicker of light to follow

The last one had come to her easily. It wavered and waned, threatened under the extension of a large, inviting palm, and the raw anger its owner brought out. But it kept burning. It kept her burning, refusing to back down even as the very air from her lungs expelled until they were dry, body cold and stiff.

Until Ben blew at the embers, fanning them back to flame. And his wide smile, and teary eyes, and the relief that palpitated down the bond turned it to a forest fire.

It should’ve kept roaring across the valleys of her lifetime, down each and every path travelled, with Ben at her side. He’d have made her a Solo. Not a Palpatine. Not a Skywalker.

But he slipped away from her touch, fading into the very air that snuffed out her light. And Rey couldn’t rediscover it – not in her friends, or her many journeys, or the beings she met along the way.

Only in him will she find it. And somewhere, somehow—there must be a way.
