“Why am I here?” she asked again.

Iris looked confused. “It’s the clinic. Where we put injured people. To heal them.”

“But why am I here?” Bearstrength repeated.

“You were injured. Quite badly, in fact, that strange little creature who called himself the Quartermaster was ready to build your pyre when he brought you in. What’s the last thing you remember? Doctor Hydromel didn’t think you had any brain damage, but limited memory loss isn’t uncommon in cases of extreme terror.”

“You dare call Bearstrength Wormslayer a coward to her face, little elf?!” Bearstrength roared. She catapulted to her feet, hand clamping on Iris’ waist and hauling the elf up to look her in the eyes as she rose to her full height. Her fingers nearly met her thumb, and she marveled at the thought of such a small being challenging her this way.

Iris’ colorful aura shifted, orange and yellow tones gathering at her hands, but her face still showed only mild concern.

“No memory loss, then, excellent. In that case, I really must ask you to clarify your earlier question if the previous answer was insufficient.”

That's a lot of words to say fascist sympathies. His fascist sympathies led him to support fascists. Now he's a fascist. It's literally that simple.

Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.

That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.

They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval. And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after. Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?

The thing that no one on the left seems to grasp about former Republicans/Never Trumpers is that all we really care about is beating Republicans. We would absolutely vote for DSA candidates if the choice is a Republican. The only reason we care about DSA is when it keeps a Democrat from winning.

My sibling in Surtr, I assure you that I know far more about US history than you will ever learn. I don't agree with John Brown on everything, but he fought against slavery and genocide, and thay puts him one up on ol' Abe, who rated nationalism above ending slavery and committed genocide.
