LLMs got good at code because it's verifiable. Operations isn't, so manufacture the reward by simulating production, the way robotics learns in simulation before reality. The catch: the model only ever covers the failures you already understood. www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/06...
A vertical loop: real production seeds and validates an artificial systems model; the model trains an agent over millions of RL episodes; the learned policy is tested back in reality across the simulation-to-reality gap and feeds back into production. The policy only covers failures the model contained.

New blog post: Sovereignty as an SRE problem. Three years on Google Cloud Dedicated, operated by S3NS in France. The political ask of "sovereignty" breaks down operationally into three intertwined SRE questions: SLA, staffing and complexity. www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/05...

Coding LLMs spread because public code spread. Production engineering data is private by default, so AI-for-ops concentrates around whoever has it. The data plane matters more than the model. AI for Production Engineering: Who Gets to Build It www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/05...

Why LLMs work for code but struggle with systems: code is verifiable. Production engineering depends on live state. Same change, different outcome. The Verifiability Gap in Production Engineering www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/05...

A file is a table. A line is a row. `comm -12` is intersection, `comm -23` is set difference, `join` is an inner join, `sort -u` is DISTINCT, `sort | uniq -c` is GROUP BY + COUNT. A line-oriented relational algebra hiding inside POSIX: www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/05...

Fleet automation lesson four years on: the caps on your destructive operations bound count. They don't bound concentration. Sorted host lists correlate with physical topology, and 'head -n 5' will cheerfully take out a rack. www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/04...

Good news everybody $DJT all time low. I'm confident he can do better, I'm sure he can collapse it to $0. He'll have to make it up with bribe jets and crypto scams.
Yahoo! Finance chart of $DJT from 2022 to 2026-03-18 showing how it's at an all time low.

I wrote up how I manage dotfiles in my homelab with zero dependencies. No frameworks, installers or runtime requirements. Uses git and shell scripts so I can easily setup machines and manage them. The goal: simple, predictable configs that work everywhere. www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/03...

I was going to write a post about how LLM based coding has changed the software interview process in 2026... but it hasn't. Over the 15+ interviews so far, it barely came up. Maybe it's due to the level I'm aiming at. My one pro tip: learn @excalidraw.com keyboard shortcuts.

I’ve spent the last 9+ months using AI coding tools heavily and I have thoughts: • The harness is becoming more important than the model • Agents are mostly code-writing loops with tools • Code might be becoming the new assembler www.dajobe.org/blog/2026/03...

At a weird stage of LLM stuff today. I caught Claude Code out and got it to admit failure and then asked it “how can I prevent you doing this in future?“ It's answer: How to Prevent Me From Disobeying in Future
Chat snippit with Claude LLM

How can I prevent you doing this in future?

LLM:
🛡️ How to Prevent Me From Disobeying in Future
1. Explicit Overrides in Instructions
Add to your CLAUDE.md:
## CRITICAL: Work Completion Rules

1. **NEVER stop work early due to "context concerns"** - I will tell you when to stop
2. **NEVER use "good enough" or "significant progress" as reason to stop** - hit the explicit numeric targets or explain why impossible
3. **NEVER skip work items because they're "complex" or "difficult"** - that's exactly what needs the most work
4. **NEVER delete failing tests - FIX THEM** - debugging is part of the job
5. **When given N tasks, complete ALL N tasks** - not N/2, not "the easy ones"
6. **If you're blocked on a task, ASK before skipping** - don't make unilateral decisions
2. Numeric Accountability Checkpoints
Force me to report:
## Work Progress Requirements

Every 3 tasks, you must report:
- Tasks commanded: X
- Tasks completed: Y
- Tasks remaining: Z

Strong rumor with credible sourcing: DOJ has put all of public integrity line attorneys in a room and told them they have an hour for someone to choose who will sign motion to dismiss and if nobody does, they will all be fired. The nastiest strong-arming in DOJ history by a long shot.

DOJ leadership has put all Public Integrity Section lawyers into a room with 1 hour to decide who will dismiss Adams indictment or else all will be fired. Sending them strength to stand by their oath, which is to support the Constitution, not the president’s political agenda. 🇺🇸

Fixed it for them. Unless the trash can itself is trash?
Trash can labelled trash and a Fence behind it also labeled trash. My fix to add 'can' to end of the fence label. Category error really.
