aughhh her hope is so infectious here even as it's crushed under all her doubt and conditioning .

A long time ago, on this very hill in fact, Sable read to me a story about a wondrous utopia that could only exist by perpetually torturing a single child. It seemed to me that no matter how many imperials we killed, no matter how much progress we made, even if we annihilated the empire entirely, there would still be some proverbial child somewhere suffering so the rest of us could go on.

The world's continuation in any recognizable form depended on someone's labor being ripped from them like vultures tearing apart carrion. Sure, certain technologies could ease that burden for one person, but not those that maintained such technology, not those that mined the raw materials for it. We were all bound up in this unending chain of human misery.

No matter where I turned, these debts stacked up. I could not justify my existence in a world that depended on such violence.

This was the guilt at the heart of the world that needed to be cleansed before we as a species could truly call ourselves enlightened in any meaningful sense. We were no better than roadkill until then. Worse, in fact.

If we liberated all of the fusion reactors from the Empire, every last one instead of the scant few the rebels had, maybe we would have the energy to one day construct this world. With it, we could mine hydrogen atoms themselves for their nuclear binding energy. The smallest atoms may be a sacrifice even I can accept. If a single atom were that proverbial child, maybe I could live with myself.

Even then, uncertainties still haunted me. Who could build such a world? Who would maintain it? Would I come to regret those costs? Would we all end up in the same place after the dust settled where someone, somewhere, had to be tortured into holding up the rest of the world? I really didn't know how we'd get here.

That was one more reason to hold Sable as close as possible. She knew how to make the impossible happen.
