In this whole 'AI solves 90-year-old maths problem in days, but who did it first?' controversy, I feel like this particular detail is not getting as much attention as it should.

Text from mathematician's letter that gives credit to humans for providing the idea for how to solve it: "The program this fits into was not started by us nor was it proposed by a Large Language Model. The credit for the basic idea of this program goes to Diego C´ordoba and Luis Mart´ınez-Zoroa, who for several years have been exploring the construction of forced blow ups. We took their work as a starting point, using Large Language Models to push their program to completion. Concretely, what Levent and I did was to take the C´ordoba and Mart´ınezZoroa program, which achieved blowup results with rough forcing, and, with a great deal of help from LLMs, push it to smooth forcing and to the incompressible Euler equations. The ideas making this line of attack possible are due to C´ordoba and Mart´ınez-Zoroa. Let me make plain what I have said to colleagues in private: in view of this body of work, I believe Luis Mart´ınez-Zoroa deserves a Fields Medal."

Today is the 499th birthday of English mathematician, occultist, and court astronomer/advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, John Dee. Here's one of the wax seals (in the British Museum) used in the 'Enochian magic' practiced by Dee and Edward Kelley, through which they (allegedly) spoke with angels.

A circular disk made of wax, about 5 inches across in diameter and half an inch in thickness. It has an outer circle around its diameter, with inscribed writing between the edge and the circle, and then a heptagon inscribed within the circle with the points touching the circle. Again, writing is inscribed around the heptagon. Within this is a 7-pointed star, and within that is a hexagon, and withing the hexagon is a pentagram.
