Puma should be banned from football for their designs alone tbh
SOME of City’s sponsors have spoken out in support of the club, with Etihad Airways even exploring legal action against the Premier League. It seems kit manufacturers Puma have tried to see the lighter side of the scandal: in a display at their Oxford Street store featuring the club’s home strip, a sign advertising a ‘Cityzens Support Line’ takes centre stage. "It is also understood that the WSL will not investigate the women’s team in any way."
Etihad clash reminder of City Women’s ties to club’s 114 charges
Sport4 Oct 2026Jessy Parker Humphreys

There was not much to suggest a club under existential threat on Thursday as Manchester City Women became the first City side to play publicly since the Premier League announced that an independent commission had found the club “guilty of all financial charges”. Some fans sang Sheikh Mansour’s name during their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid, but the majority stuck to the more familiar songbook aimed at the women’s team.

The main narrative has been that the charges bear little relation to City’s women’s team, and if anything, the criticism levelled at City over the years has been that their owners have not spent enough money on the women’s side.

City’s arrival in the WSL was controversial. The FA announced one game into the 2013 season that Doncaster Belles would be relegated to the second division for 2014, with the newly revamped City taking their place in the division. The Belles won two league titles and six FA Cups across the 1980s and 1990s, so the decision was deeply disputed. It gave the impression that the FA was cosying up to a bigger club which had not previously invested in the women’s game, just because it had greater financial backing. The fact that the independent commission has now shown that the club was flagrantly breaching Premier League rules during that period makes that decision by the FA look egregious, but it is water long under the bridge.

City did not put much money into the team in 2014 however, and even examining more recent accounts of the women’s team, they fall far behind Chelsea and Arsenal in that regard. Chelsea reported commercial revenue of more than £16 million in 2024-25, while Arsenal reported commercial revenue and group income of £13.5m. City meanwhile were just below £7m.

What, exactly, do you think you're doing here Mr Prime Minister?
Burnham said: "Everton was in this position a few years ago and you might remember that I fought for Everton in that situation because I still hold the view very firmly that they weren't fairly treated in that process."

Drawing a comparison between that and City's current predicament, he added: "I remember people proclaiming Everton guilty at the time and with hindsight I think more people would say that wasn't fair, the way that was handled.

"So it would be wrong of me to leap to one side given the experience that I'd had before becoming prime minister."

It is "frustrating when people rush to judgement", Burnham said.

He accepted there was "a lot at stake" for City fans, the club and Manchester itself.

But he added it would be wrong for him to intervene.Asked by the BBC's political editor Chris Mason if he was concerned that Manchester City's owners would now sell the club, Burham said on Wednesday: "I would be really concerned to lose them.

"They've been such a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester and obviously the building of Manchester City into the global force that it is."Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester until June, added: "I do actually thank the City Football Group and the wider ownership for the money that they didn't just put into the Etihad [Stadium] and the campus around it but also into the city".

He said he was "of course" confident that his own interactions with City's owners when he was mayor would stand up to scrutiny.

Gab antics are diving me mad
Daily Star23 Sep 2026

I WAS so glad Gabriel cost Arsenal the Champions League final by missing the decisive penalty – because he deserves good fortune about as much as Florian Wirtz deserves his £116m price tag. Gabriel (inset) might be a diamond off the pitch. He probably loves his kids and helps little old ladies cross the road. But on it, he’s about as likeable as sandpaper in your boxers. He went viral at the weekend for diving to win a free-kick against Brighton, a display so annoying it might as well have been sponsored by James Corden. Shielding the ball near the corner, he waited for one of Yasin Ayari’s arm-hair follicles to nudge a couple of oxygen atoms in his direction, then collapsed like a Victorian maiden at the sight of an exposed ankle. I get it. It’s trademark Arsenal sh*thousery. But with cameras everywhere and football’s relentless hard-on for VAR, why can’t we stamp this nonsense out? VAR is a bigger PR nightmare than Kanye West. So when Gabriel is caught dead to rights conning the ref, punish him retrospectively and cut Arsenal’s whingey Brazilian man-baby down to size. What’s not to love?

"De Zerbi feels ‘click’ is close for Spurs"
The Times - De Zerbi feels ‘click’ is close for Spurs
Tom Allnutt

De Zerbi feels Spurs need to be calm in front of goal
The team and targets may have changed but Tottenham Hotspur are 17th again and seeking another click moment against Aston Villa.

Only ten games ago, Spurs were celebrating a win at Villa Park on May 3 that was a turning point in their fight for Premier League survival, after they played with conviction against a strong — albeit rotated — opponent, scored two early goals and climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time under Roberto De Zerbi. With three games left, that victory put safety in sight.

De Zerbi would have hoped to be in a different position and mood four matches into the new campaign, with vibes and ambitions supposedly all changed after £380 million spent in the summer transfer window. Not to mention the team. Of the side who played against Villa in May, only three, perhaps four, are likely to start today . Richarlison, who scored the winner, is now most definitely out in the cold.

Yet Spurs are once again seeking spark and confidence against Villa, after a winless, goalless, joyless start in the league. And just as Villa’s Europa League commitments felt timely for Tottenham back in May, they now face a Villa side with problems of their own, sitting 19th after an even gloomier start to the season. For either side, a win will reassure the doubters. Lose, and a lengthened three-week international break will feel never-ending.

De Zerbi believes that the click — la scintilla, as he calls it in Italian — is close. “Sometimes you have to change everything and sometimes you have to improve what you already are doing and you have to stay calm,” De Zerbi said. “For our performances we could have had more than two points. Yes, in the last third we can create more chances but in Liverpool we did and we didn’t score [more than one]. I see the players being much more light. Not too much, but light enough to be clear, to be calm when y…

PUT A CORK IN WHINE, MIKEL
Daily Star16 Sep 2026

MIKEL ARTETA puts the arse in Arsenal. I’m so sick of his slimy, bully-boy tactics, ripped so blatantly from the Sir Alex Ferguson playbook they’ve still got bits of stale Wrigley’s stuck to the pages. That Lego-haired pillock not only threw a hissy fit about Sunderland being awarded a stonewall penalty on Saturday, but launched a ludicrous post-match rant where he declared the decision “unacceptable” and “sad for football”. Ezri Konsa had his arms clamped around Dan Ballard like he was about to yank him out of the path of a speeding bus. Arteta (inset) whined that Konsa got “judo rolled” – but you can’t get rolled unless you’re already grappling like a sly little cheat. Defend legally and you don’t end up on your arse. It ain’t rocket science. Just because Arsenal are as naturally gifted at wrestling blokes to the deck as they are at choking in Champions League finals doesn’t mean we should just sit back and let them normalise it. Nor should we swallow Arteta’s snide attempts to intimidate the officials. The man has as much class as he had highlights in his playing career.

Let’s be clear though. Arteta is not “very worried” about all this. He’s not “sad” or indeed, as he later emphasised for good measure, “really sad”. He’s not concerned solely with “protecting the game”, speaking here for all of us, just a fan of football.

Come off it. This is a manager we know to be obsessed with the most marginal of gains, to micro-plan the micro-details. As is all elite sport now. There has been talk of rowing coaches installing fibreglass toilet seats at their training hubs having calculated the average athlete spends 20 minutes in there and this is all key glute management time. Arteta loves this stuff. There’s no way Ben White isn’t sat fiddling with his phone at the training ground on a gold-standard Easy-Cup Mega-Soft Evacu-Throne. So it is with his public statements. This will have all been gamed and contingency-planned in advance. And for hard, rational, tactical reasons, because this is how the game is played and run now. So what does it mean?

There are three things we know for sure. First, Arteta was right. This was a bad refereeing decision. Most obviously it was factually wrong. Ballard very skilfully pulled Konsa down on top of him, while simultaneously feigning shock that such a thing could happen.

Reading a piece in the Times, it's like the greatest hits of all the nonsense they talk about Arsenal with added 'and now they also do cynical fouls'. We have the Brighton manager complaining about Arsenal time wasting (when his side wasted more time all season), and, of course, corners
On Sunday, Rice was sprinting back as Chelsea broke away when trailing 2-1 with seven minutes left. Rice clipped the back of Morgan Rogers, the attacking midfielder who wanted to exchange passes with Cole Palmer.

Instead, Rogers felt that it was deliberate and squared up to the Arsenal midfielder — his England team-mate — earning him a booking.

In the first half, Riccardo Calafiori roamed forward and was aware that Reece James wanted to start a counterattack from his own half, so the Italian tripped James. It was innocuous, but enough for Arsenal to regroup and get back into their shape. Palmer did a similar thing to stop Myles Lewis-Skelly, so Arsenal are not unique by any means — but they are perhaps better than everyone else at doing it.When the Arsenal manager was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City he was filmed during a documentary instructing David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne to foul in the transition.

Under Arteta, Arsenal have become more cute and clever with each of their title challenges in recent seasons, culminating in their triumph in May.

Arteta wants them to control the game whether they have the ball or not. He played for Arsenal when the team were perceived to be a soft touch, playing attractive football but ultimately losing, during the latter part of Arsène Wenger’s tenure.

Last season, Arsenal’s game-management was criticised by Fabian Hürzeler, after his Brighton & Hove Albion side lost 1-0 to Arsenal. Hürzeler accused Arsenal of time-wasting tactics that are “not football”. They were also accused of being overly physical at corners.

AT LAST, ELECTRIC CHELSEA LOOK LIKE A PROPER CLUB AGAIN
...but formidable Arsenal still have an extra gear as Arteta triumphs in Basque barn burner
Daily Mail7 Sep 2026OLIVER HOLT Chief Sports Writer

THEY are childhood friends from San Sebastian, who played football on Playa de la Concha, and received eclectic football educations that were influenced by the minds of men such as Johan Cruyff, Pep Guardiola and Rafa Benitez.

They were both fine, cultured midfielders, thinkers who were born to be distinguished coaches.

They met as coaches for the first time yesterday, dressed identically in the style of the fashionable manager, shortsleeved shirts, dark slacks and pumps with dashes of white.

But they are not in Basque Country any more. English football has them now. And yesterday afternoon, they were swallowed up by its passions and its glories. Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso, the managers of Arsenal and Chelsea masterminded an absolute barn burner of a game, a contest full of sound and fury and, sometimes, footballing beauty that was a credit to both of them.

At the end of the breathlessness, Arsenal ran out winners and even at this early stage of the season, it felt significant. Chelsea had come here as pretenders to Arsenal’s throne after a swashbuckling start to their campaign but even if they did themselves credit, they could not quite keep pace with the champions.

Alonso (right, with Arteta) saw his side produce some stunning attacking football and broke with lightning speed and skill. This result suggested they will improve dramatically on their 10th-place finish last season but that they have to take another step forward to be a match for Arteta’s side.

This Chelsea has many attributes but it cannot quite match Arsenal’s completeness. Arsenal are an eight or nine out of ten everywhere on the field. And their substitutes are on the same level.

Chelsea have weaknesses in defence and midfield that were their undoing at the Emirates and will be again. They ar…
