No, because it was never about efficiency....

David Garfield @dagarfield.bsky.social · 12/02/2025
I am not curious. The answer is no. But it isn't hypocrisy. Its only hypocrisy if you think these cuts were about efficiency in the first place.

I don't know about you, but I enjoyed President Musk's first oval office press conference. He even brought his kid and some sort of orange puppet to entertain him. He's a nice dad.

There might be something to this if the administration returned this money to researchers. Is that going to happen...doubt it. In any case, this is a stupid way to do reform. In fact, its literally the opposite because now we get chaos and lawsuits.

I had not heard that story before. I'm bothered by how often this sort of money shifting happens. This was also essentially what happened to my group leader position -- the University shifted funds around and then the budget got tight and suddenly...surprise! No more money for juniors.

David Garfield @dagarfield.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
How general do you think this is in life (or at least plant life) vs. (maybe??) some kind of impact for how variation is selected as part of the breeding process? Its really striking how localized your results are for TFBS and not "regulation" in a more general sense.

And yet, in terms of direct recipe for success, this advice is correct. Its not good, but I see essentially nothing in the reward structure of academics that values anything other than focus on yourself.

Katalin Karikó on the status economy of academia. She’s the hero we don’t deserve. Source: josephnoelwalker.com/147-katalin-...
There is a “centre” where the money, the fame, is; most likely your proposal gets funded because it’s on the most favourable topic. Maybe today, RNA is [most favourable]. If you are working with mRNA, maybe that's the centre there.

And then there are people in the periphery. There is no fame, there is no money, no nothing there. The only thing in the periphery is freedom. You can do what you like to do, what you feel is important.

Here’s what a proposal is: why they should give me money. And they should question that. “She came from university nobody knew about.” “She never had a mentor who was famous.”

And somehow it gravitates always to the same people, same circle. They get published there, they get the money. And that's another explanation: I was not famous enough or didn't have anybody who would support me in a way that somebody that’s a famous and well-established scientist stands behind you and says, “Oh, look at this, it’s good.”

Congrats to Karikó and Weissman on the Nobel for mRNA modifications! Their work was not appreciated by the university or reviewers at the time, but has saved millions of lives. A great example of the value of discovery science and reminder to not limit academic research to immediate applications.
