Live facial recognition. A waste of time. Waste of money. And, crucially, lays waste to our rights. For the supposed golden goose of digital policing to spit out one (false positive) match is an indictment of this invasive tech. Tech and surveillance aren't the solution to complex social problems.

Trial of live facial recognition in London stations ends with a false positive and no arrests
Freedom of information request finds six-month trial cost £320,000, used almost 100 police hours and led to just one – incorrect – alert

Happy Sci-Fi Cutaway Saturday! Here's Leiji Matsumoto's diagram depicting Space Pirate Captain Harlock’s ship, Arcadia.

You can't promote spending money on Harry Potter and support Trans rights at the same time, not when the author actively (and vocally) spends her royalties to take away those rights. This is not making trans people feel like they belong there.

London's Cycleways network now stretches a whopping 450km. That’s even further than the distance from London to Paris. And with 1.5 million daily cycle journeys, it's helping transform how Londoners travel, improving health and cleaning our air.
Graphic with a dark purple background. A white Mayor of London logo appears at the top, above the large headline “More ways to ride.” Below is a photograph of three cyclists riding along a London cycleway, with the lead cyclist in the foreground and bollards separating the cycle lane from the pavement. White text at the bottom reads: “London now has 450km of cycleways, which means we’ve grown the cycling network by five times since 2016, making journeys safer and easier for everyone.”

"People’s faces being scanned without consent and being added to lists is worrying enough, but the speed which Facewatch technology now makes it possible for someone to encounter the police force in the middle of their daily shop is a really dangerous escalation." 🗣️ Sarah Lasoye for ORG.

The social media ban for under-16s does nothing to sort out the harms caused by platforms. Harmful content is a product of a business model that uses data to drive engagement and target users with ads. Digital ID checks feed more data into this system, while leaving the engine for harms unchecked.

Open Rights Group has responded to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement that the Government will ban social media, including gaming sites, for under 16s in the UK.

From food to pharmaceuticals, most companies have to prove that their products are safe before they’re sold. Until social media companies can prove their platforms are safe for young people, a ban for children under 16 is the only way to stem the harms we know are happening now.
