Heinrich Hoerle (born otd in 1895) 🎂 : The Poet, 1918-19 Oil on canvas Degenerate Art LVR Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn Further info in the alt text 👇
Hoerle was a Constructivist artist of the New Objectivity movement who belonged to the Cologne Dada circle.

His topics are the war and its cripples, the world of the workers, the mass of man and the machine.

Inspired by the Italian Pittura metafisica, his factory workers become robotic beings. Through the influence of surrealism, his characters get more plasticity from the mid-20s, suggestions from Fernand Léger and the purists then give the impulse to return to constructive elements.

After Hitler took power, his work was condemned as "Degenerate" and many of his paintings destroyed.

Writing about Surrealism & the rise of fascism & am reminded that at the Feminist Strike in Florence I saw one protester with Max Ernst's painting The Triumph of Surrealism (1937). Depressingly relevant.
Max Ernst's painting The Triumph or Surrealism (or The Angel of the Hearth) 1937, painted after the defeat of the Repulicans in the Spanish civil war. Displayed in a protest placard with a rainbow flag perhaps reminiscent of the Italian PACE flag. Florence, Italy. Event by Non Una di Meno.

Have been thinking a lot lately about something Dada artist Hugo Ball wrote in his diary in 1916, amidst the violence & turmoil of World War I, as he reflected on the movement's use of masks, costumes, & performance: "The horror of our time, the paralyzing background of events, is made visible."
