I generally like him as a late night host, but Seth Meyers' segment "Jokes Seth Can't Tell" irks me on a conceptual level. I know it's comedy, but I firmly believe that neither in comedy nor in other language is it cool to have differences in ok topic or vocabulary.

Second time in my life a particularly bad SVT event sent me to an emergency room. Not surprisingly an ER in Ireland is not very different from an ER in the US.

I considered myself moderately skeptical of broad machine learning, but I've both become more neutral on the topic and a lot of people seem to have moved towards really hardcore "anti" on the topic. Wild to see.

I think it's pretty safe hedging for big ML companies to vaguely call for each other to move more slowly in doing research. On one hand, nothing useful can, even in principle, come from such calls. But on the other they'll be blamed less when change has some sharp edges.

It's a bit weird reading about Ireland considering changing its stay duration for citizenship. Makes me much less enthused about the country and in staying here.

The idea of the Overton Window is good to keep in mind, but it should not lead to confusion of one's goals. People on either side of the political spectrum should not take it as a goal to move things maximally in their direction from center; maximalism is bad in meeting actual goals and as tactics

I refuse to blanket condemn political violence, although as a tool it should be used incredibly sparingly, in cases where it is almost unimaginable that deep, generally-ongoing wrongs could face justice, against people who are elbow deep in the abuses. It's not a toy. It should be very, very rare.

With all the map silliness that's been going on recently, if we're to be a bit childish too: * Western continents: North Canadian Continent, South Canadian Continent * US -> Lesser Canada * Lake Ontario * Gulf of Mexico * Africa diminished to 1/8th the size it'd be for the map projection

It really doesn't take a lot of handiness to make one's dwelling a bit better. Spent about half an hour today removing/stowing two doors in my (Dublin) apartment that had a spring hinge making them too eager to close, where the landlord gave me big doorstops that'd occasionally fail.

It's wild to think that our cognition happens at a level where for most of the existence of humans we had no idea of the vast scale, in terms of count of individual cells, of any human body, and that casual movement probably kills a fair number of human cells incidentally.

The idea that Europe in general is much further left than the US is only clearly true if you view things from a certain, mostly economic, light. On a lot of other topics, Europe can look pretty right-wing. (modulo the large difficulties in categorising Europe as a thing, socially)

One of the thing I hate about (at least American) politics is that a lot of the good, reasonable center-this expert-friendly politics appear to come significantly from a lack of energy as much as from a desire for sensibility. In a better world, the center-left would rise to the challenge of Trump.

I have a work trip scheduled to the US in a week or so; I hadn't planned on visiting until and unless the US returns to sanity (which it clearly hasn't). Not thrilled about the idea.

Recently had a tough time explaining the term/concept of "tacky" to people who don't have English as their first language.

Sad that Tim Curry is gone, although his recent public appearances have been really rough. I don't know if he's the person I've seen the most in video over my life but he's up there (I've seen RHPS over 200 times).

child sexual exploitation, abuse, and nudity; sexually explicit language; suicide, self-harm
and eating disorders; graphic violence and incitements to violence; gambling; and restricted

Naturally the consequences of Trump's attempted dominance of Canada are leading to unbounded threats if Canada stops supplying the US with things it needs. It is a shame nobody has removed Trump yet.

Increasingly angry at a local church that dings its bells every 15 minutes all throughout the night. Years ago the local government once told them to stop at night, they wrung their hands and said it was (somehow) technically difficult and might damage the bells, and so they still do it now.

It would be really cool if there were some kind of "reclaim my attention" tech-social movement that'd push the principle in UI that any panel or feature that's designed to grab a user's attention ("engage them") must be able to be disabled by users. But then, the world has a lot of things going on

Finally recently found a good argument against culturally-centralised-nationalism in the local (Irish) variety - was arguing with someone who wanted Irish Gaelic to become to main language of the land and push other languages/cultures out.

A few evenings ago I had an interesting dinner as one of 4 expats each from a different country - 3 of us left our country because of something traumatic, and one left because his country just felt a bit small. Yet only I was the one who would love to go back if the madness were surely gone.

Oof was in a conversation after work today and had a new experience of hearing my dad's voice as I remember it coming out of my mouth. Some time back I already saw my grandma's face in my mom but this whole turning of generational cycles thing is so weird to feel in the gut

One of the more concrete jobs of a political philosophy is to set up patterns of thought that judge what kinds of harms are worth worrying about (phrased differently, what kinds of harms are legitimate harms).

I’m interested in finding a nice juicy space opera, ideally something kinda like Iain Banks’ Culture series, or Ken MacLeod’s Fall Revolution series. No neopronouns, deally not trying to make points on modern social issues. Cosmic horror is okay, a bit of comedy is also okay. Any recommendations?

The line Trump makes from "North Korea respects me personally" and "I want them to keep making me feel good" to "let's not send them a bad message" to "let's back away from South Korea" is both utterly unsurprising given Trump, and also something I refused to consider and am WTFing right now.

For the first time in US history, America betrays South Korea, one of our closest allies for over 75 years. These exercises in various forms have taken place every year since 1974.

Wondering if we're entering a weird future where the main purpose of ballet dancers is to swarm around lead singers of bands in their music videos.

It feels really weird to learn to be more assertive by being frequently annoyed at bad interaction style from the health app on my phone. I don't think I'll ever treat real humans as nearly as adjustable, nor forget the costs, but I now see more of a possibility of adjustment w/ real ppl

I still would love to return to the US someday, but I really don't see any signs of sanity coming back. Deeply weirded out by people in congress saying, with no shame, that they think Muslims don't belong in elected office.

I recently-ish saw some images of the home of a recently deceased friend, and how organised he was with his tech stuff. In trying to distract myself from thinking about him, I've been thinking a bit about how my stuff is more semi-ordered. No labels, roughly similar things loosely grouped together.

I'm from a part of the left (in the US) that is reasonably friendly to cops while still thinking policing in the US is misstructured It's wild to compare it to my new (temporary or not, unsure) home of Ireland where policing is barely done most of the time, creating a very different set of problems

I feel a little weird when I see performative rudeness, or public rudeness, as a value in communities. Even though I sometimes use it, I use it as a tool. I don't like to see it relished.

My position remains - I will not celebrate death, although I will celebrate when bad actors leave the US Political System (regardless of how). Lindsey Graham was bad for US Politics, and it is good he will no longer contribute to the rot of the nation.

Wondering how sociologists could trace things like memes flowing across a population and evolving. When I was young there was a silly rhyme floating about: There was a sloppy chemist Alas he is no more For what he thought was H20 was H2SO4 A lot of stuff like that probs never gets written down.

It's a little surprising that Dropbox still puts so little effort into Dropbox Paper. You still see that "you can't edit stuff now" message when their server side is broken for a bit, despite that being a fairly easy thing to fix with local storage parts of modern browsers.

Deeply disturbing that SCOTUS doesn't seem to be willing to uphold long precedent very consistently against claims of unilateral presidential power.
