Who else is going to Modal's Runtime event on Thursday in SF? I'll be there most of the day, dipping in and out for meetings occasionally. If you're around and wanna chat virtualization, hypervisors, s*nd*box*s, impending microvm and container obsolescence, drop me a line

We are already experiencing the pain of the current SoA, so what's the ideal for the current and next age? Kicking this question around for months (years?) now

What exactly should the next public cloud look like? For agents? Agents and humans? A layer on top of existing entities? Or not? There are so many questions from DX to AgentX(?) to primitives, to orchestration, to shape, to zones, to hardware, to.. everything.

Yes, we can dramatically improve the Unix process model, by orders of magnitude, in terms of resource use, speed, and safety, and keep the exact same semantics. (blog post dropping Friday, hopefully 🤞) boxer.dev / blog

I've always thought Endianness as it's defined, should be reversed, at least with how we read the env signals: Little-endian = 1234 Big-endian = 4321 ^ literally from POSIX spec Am I wrong that each order should be reversed to make more semantic sense in these defs? or am I mixed up here?

Anyway, come by ye olde blue bottle this afternoon in soma and I'll tell how you we will actually commoditize this space once and for all, definitively

When people try to approach or imagine projects that appear to subvert these hallowed institutions, they are usually referred to as "Indie" developers. Interesting, right

There are certain things in tech that have such history, and gravity, that they seem fundamental, to the point it's impossible to imagine the industry without them. AWS is an example, UNIX/Linux is another. There are more.

Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
also, please note: some people are in fact doing some excellent work here in the space, not just casting aspersions casually here, happy to explain that difference, as well, in-person
000
Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Devs have issues naming things, luckily we can just call them what they are 😇 Sandboxing should refer to actual fundamental, design-specific sandboxing technology, or to kids' play areas. Happy to explain the difference! Hmu ifykyk

After talking with dozens of people in the Sandbox Infra space recently here in beautiful SF this last week, it now seems only fair that we change the name of the current tiff to "MicroVM Fork Reseller War", or worse, "Hardened Container War" just to be precise.

Stop me if you wanna talk Virtualization, the future of Agent Cloud Infra, why MicroVMs are almost fully commoditized, what to do about the CPU crunch, or anything else! (I'm dead serious, interrupt me, even if I'm looking at my terminal angrily 😄)

For the foreseeable future, I'll be spending every morning at this Blue Bottle in SF, at 2nd and South Park St, in SOMA in SF, working on some new infra experiments, existing projects, having meetings, and drinking coffee.

Why, yes, I am drinking a Bloody Mary discussing ISA research with a colleague from graduate school, on this exquisite afternoon by the water in SF. Subversive and shocking for this city, I know, esp in this current era; but fear not, we will persist.

I can't explain how rare the combination of deep expertise in: - Base linux internals - VMMs/hypervisors - New and developing (AND historical) virt tech - UX Design - actual low-level networking, even just fundamentals

Any sandbox companies (or providers) actually commoditizing their complements (well) these days? Or positioning so? Or that kinda strategy lost to history and never studied like so many other things

Note, this is a different type of thing than if you wanted to, say, live-migrate a Linux VM, or other virtualization abstractions tied to/emulating bare metal archs or those tied underlying kernels and storage and networking facilities or similar; some similarities, but several glaring differences

,which imo is where the current models really shine, even more so than straight code gen Check it out, feedback extremely welcome. Also, definitely seeking contributors to push it forward if anyone is interested, as I won't really have time to work on it in the foreseeable and immediate future.

Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
All that is to say though, I finished it in about 1/50th of the time it would have taken me otherwise to get it to a beta release like this, especially because of the extensive experimental period it took to decide on technical direction and architecture

Yes, I used AI assistance, as we basically all do now. Yes, the code is more verbose than I would like. No, this was not "vibe-coded".

Toyed with this idea like 5+ years ago, made small attempts with free time here and there since then, but Sol + Astra helped push it over the line in the last couple of weeks to this beta.

I personally think we should be able to rewind, pause, snapshot, restore, live/spaced-migrate any compute, across heterogeneous underlying environments, as a standard facility. and i think we're just getting the first hints of how important this will be for the next gen of infra

Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
a verbose implementer for sure, but hard to say if it's a deal breaker yet

Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
ok, astra ultra has been fun, code quality is.. different? I'm not sure if I have a full picture on what it really does in terms of decision making with hard probs, but it feels a little unwieldy with hard multivariate problems and how it addresses them via abstraction.

Any resulting thing that doesn't provide profound levels of safety, speed, and efficiency, at the lowest possible level, along with widespread adoptability will absolutely be left on the floor given where the world is at now, and where it's heading.
000
Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Virtualization tech will absolutely dominate the next 3-5 years of cloud/agent infra, harder and with higher stakes than anything we saw in the 20-teens. I think the "sandbox wars" are just a precursor, and a microcosm of the larger discussion.

Dan Phillips @d-philla.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
like, the paradigm has jumped so far and we can't go back, sooo obviously this is going to take time to shake out, and like everything else in this industry people will claim to know how to measure it, but no one actually will, and in like 7 yrs we'll look back and be like "oh"

man i tried to see how dumb ive gotten using high octane ai to assist in deep technical work, so hand code some golang + C this week, looked up libs etc. was fine, but came to new conclusion: I don't think that's the bar for being dumb/smart/sharp anymore?
