Our new investigation found worrying gaps in how police use of force against children is recorded and monitored. Proper recording is essential to human rights monitoring. The Commissioner has made 21 recommendations to protect children’s rights. bit.ly/4cAYBv7

It shows a police officer in the background and the report cover, alongside a quote from Commissioner Nicola Killean: “When children come into contact with the police, for whatever reason, they should be treated first and foremost as children.”

Today marks two years since the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024 came into force, enshrining children’s rights in law and giving our office new powers. Head of Legal, Nick Hobbs, explains how we’re using them, what has changed and why children’s rights need defending. Read: bit.ly/4vS2bI5

We’re disappointed the UK Government has announced its intention to ban children under 16 from social media. Evidence doesn’t currently show a blanket ban would make children safer online, and it may inadvertently push them to riskier parts of the internet. Full statement: bit.ly/4vcr7du

Ending the two-child cap is a positive step — it will help lift children out of poverty. But with 1 in 4 children in Scotland already in poverty, much more is needed. Scottish & UK governments must align strategies & centre children’s experiences & voices. Statement: bit.ly/48eexjO
A graphic with a dark blurred background of children sitting indoors. Large white text reads: “Scrapping the two-child benefit cap is a positive step, but more measures can be taken to tackle child poverty. Children have told me how concerned they are about the effect of poverty on themselves, on their families, and on their friends. They’ve talked about how it ruins childhoods.” In the bottom right is a photo of Commissioner Nicola Killean sitting and looking at the camera.
