What I heard in Catholic churches this weekend #2 A church member giving us a tour a gorgeous Catholic Church during the Johnstown Ethnic Festival, told us that crime is up because other cities have sent "their garbage," meaning immigrants and ppl with probs, to Johnstown, for affordable housing.

Two things I heard in Catholic churches this weekend: #1 During his homily at Saint Paul's Cathedral during a sermon on forgiveness, the priest took a gratuitous swipe at socialism, saying, "The great socialist Joseph Stalin" demeaned religion and taught that Christians are doormats.

Will Farrell's song at the end of this video was perfect. I loved reading the responses on YouTube from people who were moved to tears by its honest, funny, genuine, welcoming message.

If you want to feel like you've just gone to a great political group therapy session, go see one of Carsie Blanton's shows. We left her Pittsburgh show feeling supported, challenged, validated, uplifted, and the way you do after you've had a moment of grieving and hoping with people who get it.

Album cover for "Everything Is Great" showing laughing and joyful politicians under a depiction of burning skies (I think)

And, let's welcome immigrants if we want to maintain the population. And let's figure out how to downsize sustainably and happily.

This video moved me almost to tears. This was clearly the happiest moment in this patient's day--maybe week. The folks who facilitate these visits are angels.

About 970 attending. I didn't have a chance to write the alt text before this post mysteriously launched itself, but the photo is of hundreds of people in a large cathedral-like space. It happens to be East Liberty Presbyterian.

Sooooo many people showed up in Pittsburgh for the Frontline Dignity training to witness and document ICE activity in our neighborhoods.

If the US spent as much money building desalination plants and in other ways helping Iranian people as it is spending destroying the country and murdering them, we would be in a much different place.

This moving 2016 ballad is, sadly, more relevant than ever. Thank you, Mavis Staples, for bringing it back to our attention.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Don’t bother trying to call Sen Fetterman this morning at the Pittsburgh phone number listed on his website. You’ll get a message saying, “Service to this number has been suspended.” Neither of our PA Senators are currently available to hear our views about funding federal murder.

This is the message you'll get right now if you try to contact PA Senator Dave McCormick.

As people entered the hall they were asked whether they were okay being photographed. Those who said "no" were given instructions on how to avoid it.

The woman standing next to Gloria Steinem is Dorothy Pitman Hughes. She led a remarkable life of service and activism. You can find inspiration in her biography, With Her Fist Raised (2021), by (tragically) recently deceased Pittsburgh historian, Laura Lovett.

Small but mighty protest in Squirrel Hill tonight, Pittsburgh. Crowd is singing "Migration is movement; movement is human." Counter protester is yelling something anti-immigrant. So the crowd sings a little louder.

New York Times Cooking has a great recipe for lentils cacciatore. Lentil soups are great, too. And tofu crumbles are easy and so good (you can get a recipe online and the nutritional yeast at Trader Joe’s.)
