Why is CBC's website asking me to create/login to an account in order to have my local news shown on the page. Are they trying to drive away readers?

When Darin Kinniewess's family informed us that a second "spirit bike" had been removed from his memorial site, we decided to try something else. We hope this small plaque will be a lasting placeholder for the community to honour him and for others to reflect on the ongoing need for safer streets.
Image shows a stainless steel memorial plaque for Darin Kinniewess screwed to a wooden power post in Saskatoon, SK. Darin died while riding his bike in 2023.
The plate has an image of a simple, stylized bicycle with Darin's name underneath, and his birthdate (Mar. 13, 1987) and his date of death (Sept. 7, 2023).
The words "Forever Loved." are at the bottom of the plaque.

Saskatoon Cycles and Darin's family extend gratitude to Remnant Steel of Saskatoon for donating the material for the plaque.

Minister Jeremy Harrison has just directed SaskPower to rebuild its coal-fired power plants and continue running them past 2030. The letter directs SaskPower to begin by putting Boundary Dam unit 4 back in service. This decision is problematic for many, many reasons and I list some of them below:
Quoted passage from Minister Jeremy Harrison's letter to SaskPower staff: "Work will begin this year to restore Boundary Dam 4 to service and be re-certified. Further investments will be made in long-lead items as a part of the life extension project. In the years to come, all coal units at Boundary Dam, Poplar River and Shand will receive the work necessary to extend the life of those units."

When I hear when someone call for more oil production because of the economy, jobs, or money. I hear that we should start mining asbestos again, and restart production of CFCs, PCBs, and dioxins. Producing those employed lot of people and made lots of money just like oil does.

1/ My family woke up to the smell of smoke and a yellow sky. My daughter's reaction almost made me cry. She wasn't scared, or worried, she thinks its normal, this is what summer is supposed to be like. It makes me so sad that what she knows as as summer is much worse than what I think of as summer.

Choices. Wrote this 4 years ago today after a devastating fatal crash that took the life of a young boy walking home from school.
black text on white

Our culture's obsession with the automobile and unchecked reverence to it is killing us, our loved ones and our children and we don't care. We say we care, but when it comes time to make real change and decisions, we don't care. For god's sake we need non-profit organizations to advocate to adults in leadership positions to provide safe routes for people (kids) on bikes and those who walk/roll. Think about that. My god what have we done?
And if for some reason you dare to care, you are automatically labelled as some outsider radical or anti-car, A connection that is such a damning incitement on our failure as a society.
Want your kid to bike school - anti-car
Want your senior mother to walk to the store - anti car
And these narratives are fuelled by people in council who thrive on divisiveness.
We have decided that the speedy movement of vehicular traffic is all that matters. This has been shown time and time again in our policies, our infrastructure, the narrative at city councils and the constant politicization of all movement outside of the car.
Then it happens, a life is ripped away from us and we hear the same old rhetoric about thoughts and prayers around this horrible "accident" Well these aren't accidents, these are results. These horrifying murders are the result of years of willful negligence. Years of voting down motions to make things safer. Years of opposing humancentric design, Years of politicizing all movement outside the car. Years of limited regulation on vehicles, Years of failed enforcement, Years of a culture of rush and speed and years of unquestioned allegiance to the automobile.
These aren't accidents, these are results created by a broken and failed system that preys on the most vulnerable on our roads. But despite all these massive obstacles, our leaders still have a choice to make things better, but they continually choose not to.
They could've chosen life, but they chose cars.
