The purpose of a lightning rod is to provide a harmless 'path of least resistance'. Energy, once gathered in a unstable charged situation, will discharge sooner or later - so the rod provides an obvious, easy route to do so which does the least possible damage to the structure it is protecting.

I should write more on here! I was given GnRH agonist therapy for gender dysphoria as a schoolkid 25 years ago. 25 years of relative safety and congruence - no regrets! I've never once looked back! My mere existence is pure kryptonite to most anti-trans activist arguments. Sorry, not sorry.
