Overall, like everyone else in the video essay space, I am deeply upset with Jacob Geller's sexual assault, especially with how the news broke out by someone else without his ex-girlfriend's knowledge or consent. I will be thinking of her throughout this situation.

If you're reading this and believe outting victims is justifiable for "the greater good", then you are ignorant to your impact and I will never trust you. Did you know trauma and unsolicited judgement from strangers can make it LESS LIKELY for a victim to come forwards if that's what they wanted?

And listening to victims also means accepting their choices. How they want their story to be told, how they want to more forward and if they want their story to be public at all. Victims have many reasons to share/not share what happened to them and they all should be respected!

Letting everyone know may feel right or good in the moment, but first you got to stop, think and listen to victims. Their voices are the most important ones in any situation, not the perpetrator, allies or internet strangers.

Normalise throwing people who out victims' stories without their permission into volcanos. You're not the hero. Justice hasn't been served. You violated a victim's agency, re-traumatised them and potentially put them in danger because you thought your voice was more important than theirs.
