Current stats: 222 icon sets, 367704 icons. Components are rendered as SVG+CSS, where .css files include all attributes and SVG includes only tags with class names. This massively reduces HTML size by moving majority of code to CSS.

New location for pre-rendered icon components: gitlab.com/iconify-icons Packages for React, Vue, Svelte and SolidJS. One branch per icon set, which includes all icons in that icon set. Automatically kept up to date. Main branch lists all icon sets. Usage instructions in readme files.

Good news. GitLab seems to work flawlessly! I've also kept code that published on GitHub, seems to work now - detecting missing branches and re-publishing them makes them appear. At least for now. If nothing else goes wrong, I'll maintain packages in both, but will recommend GitLab to users.

Maybe. Thanks for idea. I'm currently testing publishing to GitLab, seems to work so far. This will be a backup plan.

Currently attempting publishing icon components again. NPM: fails for large icon sets. GitHub: branches disappearing. Attempt 3: moving to GitLab. If successful, icon components will have a new home here: gitlab.com/iconify-icons

After debugging, I've noticed that it is the same branches disappearing in all 4 repositories. All those branches are for icon sets that have many icons, thus many files: over 10k files. I don't see such limit anywhere in docs and what's worse is branches disappearing without error.

CyberAlien @cyberalien.dev · 20/09/2026
Earlier today I've announced migration of icon packages from NPM to GitHub. Well... that failed. Branches on GitHub started randomly disappearing. GitHub supposed to have limit of 5k branches per repo, but cannot handle mere 200 branches. Did not expect that. Need to rethink it...

Due to NPM issues, icon components for Vue, Svelte, React and SolidJS have been migrated from NPM to GitHub. From now on, you can install components from branches of repositories: github.com/iconify/icon... Readme has long explanation. NPM packages will eventually be deprecated. 1/2

After migration, those ~1k packages can be installed from GitHub (replace framework and icon set prefix): npm install github:iconify/icons-vue#mdi

CyberAlien @cyberalien.dev · 20/09/2026
Iconify has generated components for each icon set for Vue, Svelte, React and Solid, such as "@iconify-vue/mdi". That's almost 1k packages! Due to NPM registry issues I'm currently moving them to GitHub. NPM client can install from GitHub, so NPM registry can be avoided. Long post coming later...

I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

That's an amazing use case for anchors! I thought it was only good for tooltips, which is already very useful, didn't realise it could be so powerful.

Short version of possibly upcoming long post: open source funding for Iconify failed. I don't post much. Project works, many people use it, not much to post about. When I do mention funding there are some replies, but close to 0 actual help. Next steps are either sale of Iconify or API shut down.

Nice! It is also a very useful issue. I'm using sass in most projects, while I have no complaints about compilation times with around 30-40 sass files, anything to improve it is very welcome!

#StopKillingGames relies on creators spreading the word and giving commentary on us like @f4mi.bsky.social, @conkerax.bsky.social, Ross Scott, and many others. We would not be here without them. Treating them as second-class voices under whoever someone else deems “trusted” is deeply concerning.

Yay, another day, another email from "security researcher" about CVE "discovered" in a package I've published. And yet again, it is AI slop. At first glance it seems like solid CVE, but yet again relies on unrealistic scenario user has no access to. I'm tired of AI slop.

Automated deployments have been very unreliable lately with NPM. Usually NPM fails to download and install packages for about 20-30 minutes after new version has been published. But today, deploy failed because NPM thinks "@vue/shared" 3.5.39 (released 2 days ago) does not exist.

A few weeks ago, I talked about AI and its impact, and the uncertainty it's causing. It was a bit downbeat. I thought it would be a good idea to make something with a bit more of an uplifting message as a follow-up. Of course it hit a new audience and all the haters have shown up in the comments 😅

Many projects died because of lack of funding. OSS development is usually a thankless job with less pay than minimum wage. Being backed by corp -> money for devs -> less time to worry about finances and more time to develop -> happy developer -> better project. Corp gets good PR: win-win

Added support for Astro to Iconify Unplugin: github.com/iconify/icon... However, it is not recommended because icons are generated by splitting SVG to SVG + CSS, which all browsers support, except for Safari. Use islands with Vue, Svelte or React components instead, which have Safari fallback.
