This is the funniest thing I've seen today, possibly ever
A tweet by SarahStarberry that says "oh god read the vertical axis" on top of a chart measuring AI models' release dates and model numbers rather than any real capabilities

Today was the first time I got to do outreach, and with a middle school robotics team no less! We chatted about ecology and the challenges facing biodiversity, and got asked really insightful questions! Had so much fun 😊

New paper! Our analysis on the nutritional content of under ice phytoplankton communities is live in @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social Ecosphere! The analysis uses data from the LTER lakes to show that phytos under ice are productive & nutritious! esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Nutritional content of phytoplankton communities under ice
The effects of winter environmental conditions on lake ecology can be highly variable. Ice and overlying snow isolate the water below, impeding exchange of materials among water, atmosphere, and the ...

Labor of love published! We integrated fatty acid database created by @awegalloway.bsky.social with under-ice freshwater phytoplankton data to understand how nutrition available to lake food web shifts seasonally! An armed man charged at the Democratic candidate for governor in Ohio less than a week ago, and yet Republicans aren't being yelled at to turn down the temperature. The double standard is maddening.

For those keeping score at home: The Ohio GOP Senator who long refused to denounce his MAGA son-in-law who allegedly abused the senator's daughter and granddaughter is a *different Republican* from the Ohio GOP Senator who has long employed a white supremacist who likes to cosplay as Nazis.

Check out this new computer vision tool for detecting predator prey encounters in video! And see Braden’s rotifer video too

I am so excited to announce that my first first-author, peer reviewed paper was just published in @ecol-evol.bsky.social! The PrED model aims to save researchers time and resources by finding points in their videos where potential predator-prey encounters have occurred. doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

The Predator–Prey Encounter Detection (<fc>PrED</fc>) Model: Detecting Interactions Between Rotifers and Algae Using Computer Vision and Machine Learning
Using a simpler predator-prey pairing of a semi-sessile rotifer and motile algae, the Predator-Prey Encounter Detection (PrED) model aims to streamline and semi-automate video analysis of species int...

1. The new Trump / Kratsios plan for US science appears explicitly designed to destroy US universities. Diverting money to tech donors is probably just a bonus. Gift link.

Trump’s Plan for Science: More Money for A.I., Less for Universities (Gift Article)
Michael Kratsios, President Trump’s science adviser, proposed overhauling how the government funds research. Democrats said Mr. Trump’s actions had weakened science.

My zooplankton scanner is coming along nicely! I did a test run with a Daphnia individual in a drop of water on an Epson Perfection V550 photo scanner and it turned out great. The tray (Pic 2) should hold enough water to prevent that color distortion. Best part is everything came to less than $200
Image of a Daphnia individual captured on an Epson Perfection v550 scanner. Color distortion due to volume of water used.Piece of PVC board and glass adhered together with silicone, being clamped down and weighed down.

As a physicist I find this hilarious. The angle of the photo is so shallow that it’s almost impossible to see the color of the water; at that angle, in that lighting, the water almost 100% just reflects the sky. So congrats to Dept of Interior for figuring out how to make the water blue, I guess?

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

Recently, for *obvious reasons*, I've been thinking about what it means when anxiety and sadness are caused not by individual predispositions, but by the state of the world itself. This led me to early 19th-c. France and the notion of "mal du siècle" (sickness of the century) aeon.co/essays/young...

This means that hundreds, if not thousands of labs all over the country will close. Tens of thousands of jobs will be lost. This is in defiance of Congress's will and in defiance of good stewardship of the US economy. This is entirely because Russ Vought hates science
