Anyways sorry for the random lore dump. Just really felt like I had to get this out there. It's a lot of complicated feelings on a subject very close to me, but hopefully now when you see me say something kind of stupid you at least see where I'm coming from. I'm trying my best, I promise.

I suppose it's a sort of privilege to not feel any gratification at tearing down awful people, but I don't see it that way. If anything I wish it were that simple for me, to just be able to hate someone and not feel dirty about it afterwards, but this is how I feel in my heart.

This doesn't mean I automatically sympathize or forgive every shit head I see on the internet, but I often have this knee-jerk reaction where I try to give them the benefit of the doubt or at least hold back on immediately condemning them as if I know the whole story.

Sympathy is ultimately subjective, and I don't begrudge anyone for having to cut ties with someone for their own sake. It's hard putting your trust in someone who's already shown they can't be trusted, but I always get this doubt in my mind that says that if I don't support them, who will?

The point is I have a history of wanting to show some of amount of pushback to the concept of damning someone forever for the awful things they've done, because redemption does exist and I believe most people are deserving of a chance at reaching that redemption, or at least atonement.

Both my mom and dad have mostly bounced back from what happened between them, both have remarried and found new places to call home. I'm a lot closer with my mom but I still see my dad from time to time. The pain is still there, but we're lucky enough to be able to move past it.

I had to make the choice to not give up on a horrible person because the idea of abandoning them at their most desperate was too much for me to bear. I loved him, even after everything he did, and I couldn't sit there and watch him die.

Trust me when I say I hated what he did, hated seeing my mom so hurt because of his extremely stupid decision, I had every right to tell him to kick rocks and cut him out of my life forever. If I had done that, I have good reason to believe he would not be alive today.

My dad on the other hand rightfully lost pretty much everything. His job was closely involved with her so that was gone, of course he lost all his friends, the same ones that she had, and he doesn't really have any external family left alive on his side of the tree. All he had left was me.

Near the end of quarantine, sometime in 2021, my dad did something truly terrible to my mom (not SA or abuse thankfully, but he broke her trust in a really bad way that was very traumatizing to her). She was obviously devastated but at the very least had support from me, her friends, and her family.

I want to talk about something really personal for a sec. With so much discourse around the topic of "forgiveness" and shit I feel like I can't accurately express my beliefs on the subject without bringing up my own experiences with it. Maybe what I've said this past week will make more sense now.

Star Wars: Zero Company Liked it both more and less than I thought I would. It is mostly a watered down Midnight Suns/Xcom, but it's also one of the best star wars stories I've seen in a good while. Hawks is a really fun protag who single-handedly made me want a sequel or DLC. They got me good man

I think I'm starting to come to terms with my feelings on the whole thing. I still fundamentally disagree on a lot of the takes I've seen surrounding the idea of rehabilitation and forgiveness, but I also feel somewhat ashamed of how defensive I felt in response to it all. It's not my business.

It feels wrong to be focusing on him so much when he's not the true victim, he will still have some kind of career and I don't think his life will be totally ruined by this, but people want his head on a stick right now and it doesn't make me feel good seeing it.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he's lying again, but I can't bring myself to truly hate someone who well and truly wants to repent, who's actively trying to improve. Hating him won't make him suck any less, and I don't think it would make me suck any less either.

People are telling him he should've been open about it at the same time he's being told by the victim to keep it away from publicity. Obviously the correct choice is to not do what he did in the first place but since that isn't an option, I don't see a better way he could've handled it?

As for jacob himself, I believe him when he says he's tried to atone for what he did everyday since it happened, and I hope that he feels the pain of that atonement for the rest of his life, yet I don't love how a lot of people are reacting to his confession.
