My aunt, Priscilla Stephens Kruize, can no longer live on her own at age 87 & assisted living costs are huge. Our family launched a fundraiser to help fund her care until she gets financial aid. She is a civil rights HERO who has given so much to others - and now she needs us. gofund.me/8db8323e6

When I started running a little less than a year ago, I was in a really bad place, both mentally and physically. In my early runs I would always go by this one house and this guy would usually be out in his driveway, working on his car and he would always wave me and cheer me on.

Haven't posted about writing in a while because my productivity has slowed to a crawl. Still getting words in daily, but they are coming in drips and drops. I try not to take it personally & remind myself that creativity ebbs and flows. If I keep showing up and doing the work, it will get finished

Finished The October Film Haunt. One hell of a horror book. One of the few horror books I’ve read tha really did feel like watching a horror movie. The concept, the characters, and final chapters… just amazing. This book is right up there with Paul Tremblay’s Horror Moive, in my opinion.

Got to run 5k with my mom this morning. She’s been running for years and has been run marathons, so it was really fun to be able to share this experience with her.

Gave my first author talk and book signing today. It’s so inspiring to talk to other writers who go through the same insane ups and downs as you. Writing is such a solitary practice, and it’s so heartening and inspiring to connect with those folks who are on same weird journey as your are.

Had the day off, so I hiked Poly Canyon in San Luis Obispo and explored the university’s “architecture graveyard”. I also got to meet some very friendly horses who seemed perplexed that I didn’t have any food for them.

Kinda pissed that they never told me that “rule by all-seeing half-human worm god” was an option for a system of government back in high school civics class .

Went solo this weekend for a hike along the Jesusita Trail in Santa Barbara. The creek was flowing, the wildflowers were everywhere, and the view from the top of the climb from Inspiration Point was nothing short of spectacular.

Got a genuine chuckle at the idea of a bored-as-hell Clive Barker having nothing better to do than hop on Gmail email randos in the middle of the day. Besides, everyone knows that if the real Clive Barker wants to get a hold of you, he'll just send the cenobites to fetch you.

Group hike on the Point Buchon Trail at Montana de Oro State Park. Saw cows, quail, heron, coyotes, and even spotted some wale spouts out on the ocean. Also got views of blooming poppies and the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.

Joined some nice folks from Sierra Club of San Luis Obispo for my first 10 mile hike on the Duna Vista trail at Lopez Lake. It was a long, hot hike, but the wildflowers were blooming and we found a spot with a killer view for lunch.

Monolith is a wildly cool and intense psychological horror movie. I chose it at random and was blown away by how great it was. Lily Sullivan sells the weirdness, paranoia, and dread in an unnervingly convincing way.
The poster for the 2022 movie monolith. It shows a young woman sitting at a desk with a microphone in front of her and an ominous foggy background.

More photos from camping and hiking at San Simeon State Park. My dog is an old guy (13) who prefers a soft couch to being outside, but he had a great time patrolling our campsite looking for squirrels, laying in the tent, and trying to eat my snacks. Here’s to more adventures, little dude.

Just finished Poppy Z Brite’s Wormwood and this collection absolutely lived up to and exceeded my expectations. These are dark, wonderfully nasty little stories beautifully written. “Calcutta Lord of Nerves”, “Xenophobia”, and “His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood” are my personal favorites.
A cup of coffee and a copy of Poppy Z Bright, short story collection, warm wood in paperback sitting on a coffee table.
