One caution: among retained students of color, recipients were more likely to face a financial hold the next semester. Small awards that students don't have to apply for can improve retention at low cost, but they likely work best alongside longer-term support. Supported by the Spencer Foundation.

Recipients' fall retention rose from 91.0% to 95.5%, and their likelihood of earning a bachelor's degree rose from 83.0% to 86.6%. First-generation students saw the largest retention effect (6.4 percentage points), which nearly eliminated their retention gap.

Just don’t let my wife read those books to your kid. She can turn a lovely story sideways quickly with a few subtle changes. Our friends kids got to experience a wild story based on hippos go berzerk.
